The origin of these systems remains a puzzle: they may be the end products of complete merging of galaxies within once normal groups, or they might originate from a very unusual galaxy luminosity function in those regions that inhibits the formation of moderate-sized galaxies. We propose the first study of the globular cluster populations of the dominant elliptical galaxies in fossil galaxy groups, which will provide important new insights into their origin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10558( 4) - 07/17/06 10:53 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our goal is to detect globular clusters surrounding three large elliptical galaxies in "fossil" galaxy groups. We are using two filters, F475W and F850LP, to obtain color information in these objects, and these particular filters have been chosen to facilitate comparison with other studies. We have three target galaxies at different distances. The nearest (NGC 6482) requires only a single orbit of observations (split between the two filters). The second nearest (NGC 1132) requires a total of 4 orbits, and the most distant (ESO 3060170) requires 6 orbits. For the latter two galaxies, we will dither between orbits rather than during orbits.
