The results of this study will critically constrain models of joint quasar and galaxy formation, early star formation, and the growth of supermassive black holes. Different time scales and yields for alpha-elements (like O or Mg) and for iron result into an iron enrichment delay of ~0.3 to 0.6 Gyr. Hence, despite the well-known complexity of the FeII emission line spectrum, the ratio iron/alpha - element is a potentially useful cosmological clock. The central black hole mass will be estimated based on a recently revised back hole mass - luminosity relationship. The time delay of the iron enrichment and the time required to form a supermassive black hole (logM>8 Msol, tau ~0.5Gyr) as evidenced by quasar activity will be used to date the beginning of the first intense star formation, marking the formation of the first massive galaxies that host luminous quasars, and to constrain the epoch when supermassive black holes start to grow by accretion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10792( 3) - 06/23/06 08:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We have selected four quasars with redshifts 5.99 < z < 6.28 with J-magnitudes between ~18.4 to 19.4. The quasars are selected for their redshift, prominent emission lines, and weak contamination by strong absorption features. The grisms G096, G141, and G206 are chosen to achieve a continuous wavelength coverage from 0.8mu to 2.5 mu. For the proposed quasars, the MgII2798 emission line is unobservable with ground-based telescopes because MgII is redshifted into the strong atmospheric absorption band between the H and K bands. The broad ultraviolet FeII emission blends are shifted to the H-band which is covered with grism G141. It is fundamentally important to cover a large wavelength range containing at least one continuum window in the K-band (restframe >3200) in order to obtain a reliable estimate of the continuum strength. The use of grism G096 will allow measurements of the important continuum strength at lambda _rest =1450 A and will also cover CIV1549 and CIII]1909, as well as HeII1640 and the important intercombination lines OIII]1663 and NIII]1750. To estimate the signal-to-noise ratio which has to be achieved, we redshifted a mean quasar spectrum to redshift z=6. This quasar spectrum was resampled to the spectral resolution provided by NICMOS in the slitless spectroscopy mode (R=200, per pixel). A signal-to-noise ratio of S/N =15 in the continuum will be sufficient to analyze the quasar spectra by using a multi-component fit approach (e.g., Dietrich et al. 2002, 2003c), i.e., to measure emission line fluxes and the profile widths of MgII and CIV. To estimate the exposure times using NICMOS with grism G096, G141, and G206 we used published near infrared broad band measurements (Fan et al. 2000, 2001, 2003; Goodrich et al. 2001; Willott et al. 2003) and employed the ETC for NICMOS in spectroscopy mode (http://apt.stsci. edu/webetc/nicmos/nicmos\_spec\_etc.jsp). The spectra will be taken in multiaccum mode. An exposure time for an individual spectrum of t_int = 600 sec (with 4 non-destructive readouts) will result to a S/N = 5 to 10 in the continuum. Within one orbit (t_orb = 54 - 58 min orbit visibility in 2-gyro mode), four spectra will be recorded with a dithering of ~4 arcsec. For the proposed quasars 1.5 orbits with G096 and G141, respectively, will yield 6 spectra for the J and H band range with a total integration time of 60 min each. This will provide the required signal-to-noise ratio of at least S/N = 15 for the spectral range (0.8 - 1.9 mu). Although the thermal emission of HST causes a higher background in the K-band range, spectra taken with grism G206 are most important to define a reliable continuum level to measure the FeII and MgII2798 emission line strengths of z = 6 quasars. We estimated that 4 orbits will be necessary to achieve combined spectra of an total integration time of ~150 min with a signal-to-noise ratio of at least S/N = 5. In addition to the spectra, the quasars will be imaged using the broad band filter F110W and F150W as recommended. These images will be very useful to identify the spectrum of the quasar and of additional objects in the field. For this purpose four images at locations separated by ~4 arcsec will be taken.
