Puzia Space Telescope Science Institute N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract We propose to use HST's unique high spatial resolution imaging capabilities to conclusively confirm or refute the presence of alleged very young globular clusters in M31. Such young globular clusters with ages < 3 Gyr are not present in our galaxy, and, if real, would lead to a striking difference in the age distribution of the GCs between M31 and the Millky Way. If the apparent presence of very young globular clusters in M31 is confirmed through our proposed ACS imaging (now WFPC2 imaging) with HST, this would suggest major differences in the history of assembly of the two galaxies, with probable substantial late accretion into M31 which did not occur in our own galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10818( 8) - 08/13/07 11:36 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Restricting ourselves to the prime range B-V < 0.7 mag requires acquiring high spatial resolution of 41 candidate young GCs in M31. In our original phase II submission we looked for pairs of candidates closer than 2 arcmin among these, and found several such cases. However, the present submission represents a rework of the original one now that our program has been shifted, following the failure of ACS, to imaging with WFPC2. This means that we are now using a mode of 1 orbit/candidate with imaging in 2 filters with WFPC2. We select candidate young globular clusters in M31 more than 3 deg off the disk of this galaxy and with integrated V < 17.5 mag as our targets. We use filters F450W and F814W as they are broad band and efficient, hence short exposures will reach reasonable depths, and the wide separation of the pair in wavelength will make the detection of the stellar evolutionary isochrone sequence expected in these clusters easier. Furthermore, F450W more or less corresponds to the standard Johnson B, while F814W is a surrogate for an I filter. Thus comparison with the extensive grids of models and existing ground based data will be straightforward, and we will at least be able to establish the presence or absence of stars more luminous than the normal RGB tip. Changing from ACS to WFPC2 imaging, we will use all of our 21 allocated orbits for our short exposure survey of suspected very young GCs in M31. We use the planetary camera (pointing origin at its center, i.e. PC1) for all exposures to maximize the spatial resolution. The candidate young globular clusters have typical sizes of 5 to 8 arcsec, so they will fit nicely within the PC chip of WFPC2. We have no requirements regarding image orientation, so we expect that we are not imposing any serious constraints on when image acquisition can occur. Our targets are all within a small solid angle on the sky. Figure 2.2 of the HST Two-Gyro Handbook suggests that they will be accessible more than 130 days/year.
