We propose HST/NICMOS observations of near-IR flares, in conjunction with already approved obsrevations using XMM-Newton (214 ksec) and CSO (3 nights), which can make the precise, new measurements necessary to understand the radiation mechanism and low luminosity of Sgr A*. HST/NICMOS is required due to its very low and stable background, and its stable, tightly focused PSF, which allow accurate measurement of fainter flares than can be observed using groundbased adaptive optics systems. We will measure the spectral index distribution, the time-averaged flux and duration of flares, and the statistics of flare activity, and will confirm previously reported quasi-periodic variability. These measurements will have far-reaching implications for testing the inverse Compton scattering (ICS) and synchrotron models of low- luminosity flares, for understanding the process of accretion onto and outflow from supermassive black holes, and for constraining the acceleration mechanism of flares and the inferred black hole spin. This knowledge, in turn, will help us understand more generally low-luminosity AGN and X-ray binaries in a very low/quiescent accretion state. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10859( 5) - 03/05/07 10:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ NICMOS camera 1 will be used to monitor the near-IR flux of the black hole at the Galactic Center, Sgr-A*, simultaneously with XMM observations scheduled in 2 30-hour long observing windows. Our total observing time allocation of 40 orbits will be evenly split into 20 orbits within each of the two XMM observing windows. We have constructed our visits to use a 4-position BOX dither pattern, obtaining 2 sets of F145M and F170M exposures at each dither position, and cycling through the complete pattern once in each visit, with one visit filling one orbit. We will therefore have a total of 20 visits (20 orbits) in each XMM observing time window, for a total of 40 visits (40 orbits). Each orbit will consist of 8 cycles of exposures in the F145M and F170M filters. This choice of filters provides with reasonable throughput in combination with adequate wavelength spacing to make spectral index measurements. We wish to have as many of the orbits scheduled contiguously as possible, in order to fully sample the time-dependent variability of Sgr-A* and to stay within the parallel XMM observing windows.
