Zucker University of Cambridge N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract We propose to resolve the extra-planar stellar populations of the thick disks and halos of seven nearby, massive, edge-on galaxies using ACS, NICMOS, and WFPC2 in parallel. These observations will provide accurate star counts and color-magnitude diagrams 1.5 magnitudes below the tip of the Red Giant Branch sampled along the two principal axes and one intermediate axis of each galaxy. We will measure the metallicity distribution functions and stellar density profiles from star counts down to very low average surface brightnesses, equivalent to ~32 V-mag per square arcsec. These observations will provide the definitive HST study of extra-planar stellar populations of spiral galaxies. Our targets cover a range in galaxy mass, luminosity, and morphology and as function of these galaxy properties we will provide:- The first systematic study of the radial and isophotal shapes of the diffuse stellar halos of spiral galaxies- The most detailed comparative study to date of thick disk morphologies and stellar populations- A comprehensive analysis of halo and thick disk metallicity distributions as a function of galaxy type and position within the galaxy.- A sensitive search for tidal streams- The first opportunity to directly relate globular cluster systems to their field stellar population We will use these fossil records of the galaxy assembly process preserved in the old stellar populations to test halo and thick disk formation models within the hierarchical galaxy formation scheme. We will test LambdaCDM predictions on sub- galactic scales, where it is difficult to test using CMB and galaxy redshift surveys, and where it faces its most serious difficulties. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10889( 6) - 03/12/07 16:17 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain deep ACS/WFC F606W \& F814W, NICMOS/NIC1/NIC2 F160W, and WFPC2 F606W images at 5 positions around each target, two on the minor axis, two on the major axis, and one in between. The ACS observations will provide the deepest star counts and the most accurate abundances along the principal axes; the NICMOS observations will constrain higher metallicity regions near the bulge and the thin disk truncation; and the WFPC2 star counts will be used to further constrain the halo shape (disky or elliptical). Our sample consists of all undisturbed edge-on (i>87 degrees) disk galaxies with rotation speeds >80 km/s, distance moduli less than 30.75 (to ensure reasonable exposure times), and Galactic extinction A_V<0.5. A significant fraction of the light of an old population comes from the upper RGB. We can thus use this bright tracer population to make accurate surface brightness measurements of a population by: (1) counting the surface density of stellar objects in a well defined RGB magnitude and color range; (2) summing their total brightness after removing fore- and background objects; (3) correcting for the light missing of the total population due to the limited magnitude range sampled. The average surface brightness that can be reached in this way is not limited by flat fielding and sky brightness, but by the accuracy with which we can remove contamination and sampling statistics. Both stellar evolution models and globular cluster measurements show that the V-I colors of luminous RGB stars are substantially redder for metal-rich than for metal-poor populations, providing an excellent wa y to estimate the metallicity distribution of a stellar population. For metal rich populations optical--near-IR colors provide better metallicity resolution. We will obtain 1--2 bulge and 1 outer disk NICMOS Cam1 and Cam2 observations in the H_F160W-band in parallel, arranging our tiling of the ACS images in such a way that they overlap with the NICMOS parallels of other positions. In this way we obtain optical and near-IR imaging in selected regions with very limited extra cost in observing time. Magnitude limits: To measure metallicities from RGB CMDs, we have to obtain at least S/N=10 point source photometry at 1.0\, mag below the tip of the RGB in order to distinguish 1/20 from 1/50 Solar metallicity. The TRGB has M_I=-4 for all metal poor populations older than 3 Gyr; hence we must reach M_I~-3 with S/N=10. A metal- poor TRGB has V--I~1, a metal-rich TRGB has I--H~2.5, and therefore we must reach M_V=-2 and M_H=-5.5. We calculated the exposure time needed to reach these limits using the ETC with Low Sky, optimum photometry, late K giant spectra, and S/N=10. Similar exposure times are needed in F606W and F814W, while about twice as much is needed in NICMOS F160W, and hence can be taken simultaneously. For a detection experiment like surface brightness from star counts a S/N=5 is sufficient. With the above limits we reach with ACS 1.5 mag below the TRGB. The WFPC2 F606W observations will still be 1 mag below the TRGB, sufficient to constrain halo shape. Number of orbits per position (split between F606W and F814W for ACS): IC5052 - 2 NGC0891 - 3 NGC4565 - 7 NGC4631 - 2 NGC5907 - 6 NGC7090 - 2 NGC7814 - 5 We use a combination of 2 point dithers with n+0.5 pix steps and 3 point dithers with n+0.33 pix steps to observe the 2, 3, 5, 6, or 7 orbits, spitting the observations per position in 2 or 3 orbit visits. The n values are chosen such that there is at least 1 column and row offset between each dither position. POSTARGS are used to ensure offsets when several 2 and 3 dither positions are combined. We first observe F814W with small dithers with ACS, then F606W (this is faster than going through all filters at a given position). NICMOS observations are done in SPARS64 10889( 6) - 03/12/07 16:17 - [ 3] multiaccums. We set actual durations for many ACS and WFPC2 observations. This lets us especially better fill the orbit for WFPC2, as it allows the overhead to be beyond the low sky limit. To ensure that the NICMOS observations (and sometimes WFPC2 observations) are at a particular location (in general off the bulge), we use a large POSTARG that puts the center of rotation of the observation in the NICMOS field. An orient constraint on these observations of about 20 degrees ensures the parallel ACS observation is at a desired location.
