Smith Michigan State University N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract The pulsation properties of the RR Lyrae stars in the globular clusters of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) have the potential to provide essential insight on the first epoch of the galaxy formation and to trace the merging episodes that led to the assembly of M31. Their mean periods along with the cluster metallicities can provide an independent estimate of the M31 cluster ages and, in turn, of the time scale of the M31 halo formation, by comparison with their Milky Way counterparts. We will observe RR Lyrae stars in 6 appropriately selected globular clusters of M31 using WFPC2 to derive periods, light curves, and physical parameters of these eyewitnesses of the first epochs of the M31 formation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11081( 7) - 07/05/07 12:10 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ In our preliminary study (Clementini et al. 2001, ApJ, 559, L109) we verified the feasibility of this program, i.e. 20-min exposures with the WFPC2/PC F555W (V) and F814W (I) filters provide a sufficiently good S/N to detect RR Lyrae stars even at minimum light (r.m.s. error of about 0.1 mag at V=26). We will use a similar setup with the only difference that F555W is replaced by F606W because of its better throughput. Therefore each orbit (visibility period of 53 min) can accommodate a set of one V (1100s) + one I (1100s) exposures, considering also the overhead time (no CR-SPLIT and no dither are needed, since we take multiple exposures). We observe 15 orbits (and hence we obtain 15 V and 15 I data points) per cluster, except for those clusters with previous available data for which less orbits (e.g. 11 or 12) are needed. With 15 data points we shall be able to define a light curve with sufficient accuracy and derive periods with at least 2-3 significant decimal digits. We will use the I data both to derive V-I colors and to artificially increase the number of V data points via some proper transformation (see Clementini et al. 2001) in order to have better statistics in the period-searching process. Whenever previous data are available, these will be very useful for a better definition of the period thanks to the long time baseline. We have devised two different observing strategies. In strategy 1: a) each orbit contains one F606W (1100s) and one F814W (1100s) exposures, no CR-SPLIT and no dithering; b) all orbits (11 or 15, depending on the target) are contained in one visit to that target, so that all exposure pairs are taken sequentially with no gap; c) steps a) and b) are applied to each target. In strategy 2: a) each orbit contains one F606W (1100s) and one F814W (1100s) exposures, no CR-SPLIT and no dithering; b) since the SAA does not allow to observe all orbits for a given target sequentially with no gap in one single visit, we have split our orbit budget into three visits containing 3 (or 4 or 5, depending on the target) orbits each. Therefore each target will be observed with three visits. All visits on a given target need to be taken with the same ORIENT and consecutively. c) steps a) and b) are applied to each target. Either strategy 1 or 2 will be implemented depending on observing conditions.
