Brent Tully University of Hawaii N CoI: Dr. Luca Rizzi University of Hawaii N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract An order of magnitude more dwarf galaxies are expected to inhabit the Local Group, based on currently accepted galaxy formation models, than have been observed. This discrepancy has been noted in environments ranging from the field to rich clusters, with evidence emerging that lower density regions contain fewer dwarfs per giant than higher density regions, in further contrast to model predictions. One possible explanation for this involves the effects of reionization on the forming galaxies and naturally explains both the dearth of dwarf galaxies and the apparent environmental dependence. However, before such theories can be fully tested, we require a better understanding of the distribution of dwarf galaxies. Currently, there is no complete census of the faintest dwarf galaxies in any environment. The discovery of the smallest and faintest dwarfs is hampered by the limitations in detecting such faint and low surface brightness galaxies, and this is compounded by the great difficulty in determining accurate distances to, or ascertaining group membership for, such faint objects. The M81 group provides a unique means for establishing membership for galaxies in a low density region complete to magnitudes as faint as M_R ~ -7. With a distance modulus of 27.8, the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) appears at I ~ 24, just within the reach of ground based surveys. We currently have surveyed a 30 square degree region around M81 with the CFHT/Megacam. From these images we have detected 15 new candidate dwarf galaxies. We propose to use the HST with WFPC2 to image these 15 galaxies in F606W and F814W bands in order to construct a color-magnitude diagram down to I = 25.5 from which to measure accurate TRGB distances to these candidate galaxies and determine star formation and metallicity histories. The overall project will provide a survey of the dwarf galaxies in the M81 group environment with unprecedented completeness to a limit of M_R < -7. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11126( 2) - 05/03/07 10:41 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ To create a CMD appropriate for measuring TRGB distances, we will obtain WFPC2 imaging observations of each M81 dwarf galaxy candidate in F606W and F814W (broad V and I) filters. Johnson-Cousins V and I-band filters are traditionally used to obtain TRGB distances. The F814W filter transforms well to Cousins I while the broad F606W filter provides acceptable transformation to Johnson V and is chosen over the F555W for its greater throughput. The choice of these filters allows observations in both bands to be obtained within a single orbit for each target. Previous work has shown that single orbit WFPC2 observations can provide good TRGB distances for galaxies within 5 Mpc (Makarov et al. 2006), which encompasses the M81 group. Furthermore, the field of view of WFPC2 lends itself well to the sizes (semi-major axes < 2 arcmin) of these nearby dwarf galaxies. Using the ETC for imaging point sources, we find that we can reach 26.5 mag in F606W with a two point dither in 1000s to achieve a minimum S/N of ~5. Assuming (V-I) ~ 1.0, we expect to reach 25.5 mag in F814W in 900s and 1000s to a S/N ~5. At the expected location of the tip of the red giant branch (I_{TRGB} ~ 23.8), the S/N with these exposure times will be ~20. These limits allow us to probe the RGB over 1.5 magnitudes below the tip, assuring a firm detection of the TRGB. We have previous experience observing dwarf galaxies in the M81 Group and at similar distances with both the ACS and WFPC2. Using the ACS with F606W and F814W filters observed together in a single orbit, our CMDs reached the limit of I=27 with the RGB clearly visible and the tip obvious at I ~ 23.5-24. With the lower sensitivity WFPC2 camera we can expect to reach > 25.4 in I, still well below the TRGB. Any field orientation is acceptable, but optimal orientation for 2 gyro mode is 260 or 280 degrees, providing us with a nominal 55 min of observing time per orbit for 30 days a year each. Allowing for guide star acquisition (6min), instrument overheads (4 X 2min for readout + 2 X 1min filter changes + 2min misc.), and observations of 900s in F814W and 1000s in F606W, we find that each target can be observed within a single orbit. Therefore, for 15 target candidates, we will use 15 orbits. Surface brightness estimates were made using our V and r'-band UH88 and CFHT imaging data. For 8 of our galaxies we were able to measure the mean V- band surface brightness within 6.6 arcsec directly. For another 3 candidates for which only r'-band data exists, we measure r' surface brightnesses relative to those galaxies with both r' and V-band surface brightnesses. Assuming a constant color we obtain the V-band surface brightness estimate for these galaxies. Finally, 4 candidate galaxies are too diffuse to obtain surface brightness measurements. For these we measure the V-band magnitude of the brightest resolved stars likely to be associated with the galaxy.
