Uranus equinox is only months away, in December 2007. Hubble Space Telescope observations during the past several years (Hammel et al. 2005, Icarus 175, 284 and references therein) have revealed strongly wavelength-dependent latitudinal structure, the presence of numerous visible- wavelength cloud features in the northern hemisphere, at least one very long-lived discrete cloud in the southern hemisphere, and in 2006 the first dark spot ever seen on Uranus. Long-term ground-based observations (Lockwood and Jerzekiewicz, 2006, Icarus 180, 442; Hammel and Lockwood 2007, Icarus 186, 291) reveal seasonal brightness changes whose origins are not well understood. Recent near-IR images of Neptune obtained using adaptive optics on the Keck Telescope, together with HST observations (Sromovsky et al. 2003, Icarus 163, 256 and references therein) which include previous Snapshot programs (GO 8634, 10170, 10534) show a general increase in activity at south temperate latitudes until 2004, when Neptune returned to a rather Voyager-like appearance. Further Snapshot observations of these two dynamic planets will elucidate the nature of long-term changes in their zonal atmospheric bands and clarify the processes of formation, evolution, and dissipation of discrete albedo features. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11156( 2) - 05/08/07 06:40 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to use WFPC2 to obtain disk-resolved images of Uranus and Neptune in the methane absorption band at 619 nm, and in continuum regions from 467 nm to 953 nm. With these images, we will monitor medium- to long-term changes in the atmospheres of both planets, and compare the insolation-dominated behavior on Uranus with the internally-powered processes on Neptune. Our filter selection is designed to constrain the vertical aerosol distribution responsible for the latitudinal bands and albedo features seen on Uranus and Neptune. We match the filter choices first with those used for past HST observations, and then with past ground-based observations (for continuity). The filters sample a wide range of methane absorption coefficients, which translates into probes of a wide range of depths in the atmosphere. Images in the 619-nm methane band [WFPC2 FQCH4N15], in particular, are critical for unambiguous determination of the vertical distribution of clouds and aerosols in their tropospheres. For good S/N (>100) at Uranus, the exposure times for WFPC2 filters F467M, F547M, F658N, F673N, F791W, and FQCH4N15 (619 nm), are 20, 3.5, 120, 60, 12, and 100 seconds, respectively, as demonstrated (except for F658N) by GO 10534 in Cycle 14. These exposures fit into one Snapshot window. On some visits (URANUS-RED) we will substitute F953N (exposure time 200 s) for F467M (URANUS-BLUE), since Uranus has darkened substantially at this wavelength over the past decade. For Neptune these WFPC2 exposure times increase by a factor of ~2. F467M, F547M, F673N, and an exposure at 619 nm will fit into a single 30 minute visit (NEPTUNE-SHORT). F467M, F953N and a 619 nm exposure will fit into another visit (NEPTUNE-LONG). For Neptune, we emphasize F467M over F791W, to better search for Great Dark Spots. The WFPC2 methane-quad filters exhibit significant vignetting, which has been problematic for CTL observations of Jupiter (for example). Because the apparent disk of Uranus subtends only 3.8", and Neptune less than 3", we can place both planets fully within the "best" region of the filter's field. Any photometric uncertainties still present are far smaller than the intrinsic changes of these planets (which have been verified by independent data sets).
