Michael Rich University of California - Los Angeles CoI: Dr. Samir Salim University of California - Los Angeles N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract We have constructed a sample of early type galaxies at z~0.1 that have blue UV-optical colors, yet also show no signs of optical emission, or extended blue light. We have cross-correlated the SDSS catalog and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer Medium Imaging Survey to select a sample of galaxies where this UV emission is strongest. The origin of the UV rising flux in these galaxies continues to be debated, and the possibility that some fraction of these galaxies may be experiencing low levels of star formation cannot be excluded. There is also a possibility that low level AGN activity (as evidenced by a point source) is responsbile We propose to image the UV emission using the HST/SBC and to explore the morphology of the UV emission relative to the optical light. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Use SBC to image quiescent early-type galaxies with strong far-UV emission (as detected by GALEX) in the FUV band; is morphology point-like (AGN ) or distributed (SF?). 4x440sec 4 point dither box (standard pattern) followed by 2 F165LP exposures in a dither line pattern (600s). The F165LP exposures were added later because of concerns about the red leak. The plan is to subtract the smoothed F165LP image from the F125LP image to veto the red leak photons. The sources are GALEX sources and were bright object checked using hte GALEX catalogs.
