Graves University of California - Santa Cruz N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract We have indentified a sample of low-redshift (z = 0.04 - 0.10) galaxies that are candidates for recent arrival on the red sequence. They have red optical colors indicative of old stellar populations, but blue UV-optical colors that could indicate the presence of a small quantity of continuing or very recent star formation. However, their spectra lack the emission lines that characterize star- forming galaxies. We propose to use ACS/SBC to obtain high-resolution imaging of the UV flux in these galaxies, in order to determine the spatial distribution of the last episode of star formation. WFPC2 imaging will provide B, V, and I photometry to measure the main stellar light distribution of the galaxy for comparison with the UV imaging, as well as to measure color gradients and the distribution of interstellar dust. This detailed morphological information will allow us to investigate the hypothesis that these galaxies have recently stopped forming stars and to compare the observed distribution of the last star formation with predictions for several different mechanisms that may quench star formation in galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11175( 2) - 05/11/07 15:14 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The galaxies in this sample have been selected as candidates for recent arrivals on the red sequence, based on their optical (g-r) and UV-optical colors and on their emission line properties. We have defined three subsamples of recently quenched galaxies, each potentially relevant to a different quenching mechanism. Eight targets have been selected in each of three subsamples in order to have a statistically relevant number of galaxies in each group, for a total of 24 galaxies. For each galaxy, this project will obtain 1 orbit of exposure with the ACS/SBC in the FUV (filter F115LP) and 1 orbit of optical imaging with WFPC2. The signal to noise (S/N) expected from one orbit of ACS/SBC imaging depends strongly on the actual distribution of the FUV light within the galaxy. The expected S/N ranges from a few for smoothly distributed light to several hundred for a single point source. This should allow us to distinguish between a UV-excess in the galaxy's old stars, a more concentrated or clumpy distribution of recent star formation, or central AGN activity as the source of the observed FUV flux. The corresponding WFPC2 imaging in the wide B (F450W) and I (F814W) bands is critical in order to compare the FUV flux distribution to the general stellar light of the galaxy. It will also also us to measure color gradients in the target galaxies and to map their dust content. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Four out of 24 targets have been changed from the original Phase I proposal in order to avoid targets (in one case out of four) or nearby objects (in the other three cases) which were near or exceeded the bright object per-pixel count rate limit for the ACS/SBC instrument. This determination was based on predicted count rates calculated using the STScI IRAF package "synphot" and the worst-case assumption of an O star spectrum coming from a point source. The predicted count rate is based on a Bruzual synthetic O5V star spectrum normalized to the observed GALEX FUV magnitude. In all cases, the new targets have spectral, morphological, and color properties similar to the original targets they replaced and do not in any way change the science addressed by this observing proposal or the orbit usage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11175( 2) -
