Each jet has been imaged twice before with HST, and precise proper motions have been measured for all emitting knots in the jets. Images from the first two epochs show clear differential motions between adjacent clumps, as well as shear, and possibly fragmentation. The proposed third epoch will enable us to measure the first ever accelerations in jets, quantify errors in existing proper motion measurements, and observe in real time how fluid instabilities develop in supersonic flows. The new images will make it possible to compare the behavior of astrophysical flows directly with numerical simulations and with laboratory experiments of bow shocks and clumpy flows in progress at the Omega laser facility. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11179( 2) - 05/09/07 08:04 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Observations of three stellar jets in two narrow band filters, H-alpha and [S II]. All images CR-split. HH 34: Oriented to put the jet on WF2 and the bow shock on WF3. 8 orbits total, 4 in each filter. Dither pattern is a box, with one point for each orbit. Do both filters then dither to save overhead. Tweak exposure times in each CR-split to reduce unused visibiility. Note only specific set of exposure times are allowed. HH 47: Spun 180 degrees relative to previous observations. Will miss 47D, but instead get redshifted counterflow. Blue jet is all on WF2. 6 orbits, 3 per filter. Dither is a 3-point line, with one point per orbit. HH1&2: A tight fit owing to other ORIENT constraints. Requires use of WF4 (HH2) and WF2 (HH1). 2 orbits, one per filter. Dither is a 2-point line, one position per orbit.
