Soifer California Institute of Technology N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract The formative phase of some of the most massive galaxies may be extremely luminous, characterized by intense star- and AGN-formation. Till now, few such galaxies have been unambiguously identified at high redshift, and thus far we have been restricted to studying the low-redshift ultraluminous infrared galaxies as possible analogs. We have recently discovered a sample of objects which may indeed represent this early phase in galaxy formation, and are undertaking an extensive multiwavelength study of this population. These objects are optically extremely faint (R>26) but nevertheless bright at mid-infrared wavelengths (F[24um] > 0.5 mJy). Mid-infrared spectroscopy with Spitzer/IRS reveals that they have redshifts z~2, implying luminosities ~1E13 Lsun. Their mid-IR SEDs fall into two broad, perhaps overlapping, categories. Sources with brighter F[24um] exhibit power-law SEDs and SiO absorption features in their mid-IR spectra characteristic of AGN, whereas those with fainter F[24um] show a "bump" characteristic of the redshifted 1.6um peak from a stellar population, and PAH emission characteristic of starformation. We have begun obtaining HST images of the brighter sources in Cycle 15 to obtain identifications and determine kpc-scale morphologies for these galaxies. Here, we aim to target the second class (the "bump" sources) with the goal of determining if these constitute morphologically different objects, or simply a "low-AGN" state of the brighter class. The proposed observations will help us determine whether these objects are merging systems, massive obscured starbursts (with obscuration on kpc scales ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11195( 3) - 09/26/07 15:43 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will be observing 22 extreme high-redshift mid-IR-luminous galaxies. For each object, we will obtain two orbits of WFPC2 F814W observations and a single orbit NICMOS NIC2/F160W observation, comprising a total of 66 orbits. For the WFPC2 observations, we have 2 orbits per object. In the first orbit, we will take 3 exposures of {700, 600, 600} seconds (plus 180, 140, and 140 seconds overhead, respectively) using the WFPC-LINE pattern with three pointings and a point spacing of 0.3535. The second orbit will have the same parameters, except for a POS_TARG offset of -0.25" in x and +0.25" in y. For both orbits, we will also perform NIC3/F160W parallel observations (704s per exposure). The orientation requirements have been restricted to avoid bright stars in both the WFPC2 and NIC3 apertures and maximize the number of red sequence and other extreme R-[24]>14 galaxies without being too restrictive on the schedulability of the observations. In cases where there is a bright star near our primary target, we use a pos_offset to prevent the bright object from falling in the WFPC2 aperture for the specified orientations. For the NICMOS observations, we have 1 orbit per object. We will take 2 exposures of 1344s each (plus 28s overhead) per orbit using the NIC-SPIRAL-DITH pattern with a point spacing of 0.6375. We will perform CR-SPLIT WFPC2/F814W parallel observations of {400s, 500s, 500s, and 500s} per exposure respectively. Again, we restrict the orientations to avoid bright stars in the WFPC2 fields and to maximize the number of red sequence and R-[24]>14 galaxies. We have carried out a comparison between the NDWFS coordinates and GSC2.2 coordinates for stars in the NDWFS field. We found that the median offsets between the 2 frames to be (deltaRA, deltaDEC)=(0.02,-0.06) arcsec (in the sense that the NDWFS astrometric system is east and south of the GSC2.2 astrometric system). This difference is so small that we chose not to apply any correction to the NDWFS. Our primary targets are very faint (i.e., H-band magnitudes of approximately 20-22), likely spatially extended, high-redshift (z~2) galaxies and the goals of our proposal require accurate photometry and morphology (cf. page 3 of our science justification). In order to reliably measure photometry and morphological parameters (e.g., image moments, surface brightness profiles, etc.) of low surface brightness faint targets, we need to be able to minimize the sources of detector and background noise. In addition, the observation of each NICMOS target will be obtained over only a single orbit using 2 dithers, which limits our options for rejecting particle events even for perfect low-sky conditions. The increased background associated with SAA passages will adversely affect our observations. For these reasons, we kindly request that our NICMOS observations be obtained during SAA-free orbits.
