Dreizler Universitats-Sternwarte Gottingen N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract The recent discovery that the Neptune-like exoplanet GJ 436 b transits its host star has presented us the first chance to observationally study ice giant formation beyond our solar system (Gillon et al. 2007). Using Directors Discretionary time, we propose to obtain a high-precision light curve of the GJ 436 b transit with the FGS in order to improve the current radius determination for this planet. Measuring a precise radius for GJ 436 b will allow us to ascertain whether the planet has a pure water vapor or H/He envelope like Uranus and Neptune. Knowing this will constrain its formation and evolution and help place our own solar system ice giants in a broader context. Additionally, a precise radius for GJ 436 b will be a necessity for interpreting the certain follow-up observations of this unique system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ enter description here Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11309( 17) - 12-Dec-2007 13:57:57 - [ 2] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 GJ436 STAR, M V-IV, LOW MASS RA=11H42M11.0941S +/- 0.1", J2000 V = 10.68 +/- 0.05 COMPANION, EXTRA-SOLAR DEC=+26D42'23.65" +/- 0.1" PLANET Reference Frame: ICRS Comments: Epoch of Position RA proper motion (seconds of time/yr) DEC Proper Motion (arcsec/yr) Annual Parallax (arcsec) 2000.0 0.06689 -0.8137 0.09773 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2 GJ436-REF-1 STAR, G V-IV RA=11H42M12.1056S +/- 0.1", J2000 V = 10.8 DEC=+26D46'7.86" +/- 0.1" Reference Frame: ICRS Comments: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 GJ436-REF-2 STAR, G V-IV RA=11H42M20.2896S +/- 0.1", J2000 V = 10.24 +/- 0.1 DEC=+26D45'37.30" +/- 0.1" Reference Frame: ICRS Comments: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4 GJ436-REF-3 STAR, G V-IV RA=11H42M0.4000S +/- 0.1", J2000 V = 12.35 +/- 0.1 DEC=+26D45'56.90" +/- 0.1" Reference Frame: ICRS Comments: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11309( 17) - 12-Dec-2007 13:57:57 - [ 3] Visit: 01 Visit Priority: Visit Requirements: PCS MODE FINE; SCHED 70%; ORIENT 293.3D TO 293.3 D; BETWEEN 02-JAN-2008:23:00:00 AND 03-JAN-2008:00:30:00 On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: The phase requirement is attached to the first photometric reference star, not the transit target, GJ436.
