Koekemoer Space Telescope Science Institute N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract The Spitzer Legacy project SINGS provided a unique view of the current state of star formation and dust in a sample of galaxies of all Hubble types. This multi-wavelength view allowed the team to create current star formation diagnostics that are independent of the dust content and increased our understanding of the dust in galaxies. Even so, using the SINGS data alone we can only make rough estimates of the recent star formation history of these galaxies. The lack of U-band observations means that it is impossible to estimate the ages of young clusters. In addition, the low resolution of the Spitzer and ground-based observations means that what appear to be individual Spitzer sources can actually be composed of many individual clusters with varying ages. In this proposal we plan to address this missing area in SINGS by obtaining high-resolution WFPC2 UBVI observations to accurately find and determine the ages of the young stellar clusters in a subset of the SINGS galaxies. These observations will greatly enhance the legacy value of the SINGS observations while also directly answering questions pertaining to star formation in galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Our plan is to observe two orbits in F336W (U-band) to get the signal-to-noise ratio needed based on our previous observations of young stellar clusters in nearby 11987( 7) - 15-Apr-2010 13:46:02 - [ 2] galaxies. We prefer the F336W over the F300 filter because it is narrower and thus provides a more discrimination of the SED, critical for age and extinction determinations, at the cost of only slightly more exposure time. We then observe one orbit in B-band and then observe F555W and F814W in one orbit. It turns out that most of the sample of galaxies has existing archival V and I band observations. For these galaxies we will only observe in F336W. As explained above, this band is critical for determining the ages and will provide a large science return for only 2 orbits per galaxy. An option that would add even more information about the ages of the clusters would be to get H observations for these galaxies. H is very useful in determining ages of young clusters and would give us high-resolution images of the current star formation rate. Roughly 500 HST orbits have already been used on the SINGS galaxies. However, the result is a very non-uniform patchwork using more than a dozen different filters, and only a handful of F336W observations. For the cost of an additional ~ 100 orbits, our proposal would provide the U observations that are critical for addressing a wide of questions, and would unify the database so that all SINGS galaxies would have UBVI observations. We plan to put in a supplemental proposal to observe the SINGS galaxies that are not visible during this time period.
