We will use the data to measure X-ray luminosities, black hole masses, and accretion rates; and with the accurate "clocks" provided by post-starburst stellar populations, we will directly test theoretical models that predict a power-law decay in the AGN light curve. We will also test whether star formation and black hole accretion shut down in lock-step, quantify whether the black holes transition to radiatively inefficient accretion states, and constrain the observational signatures of black hole mergers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to image our 12 post-starburst galaxies with WFC3 in the F814W filter. Our primary scientific goal is to measure the bulge-to-disk ratio. We can achieve this objective in 1 orbit per galaxy, or 12 orbits total. Our galaxies have total magnitudes in the range 18.3 < i_AB < 19.3, but are unresolved in ground-based SDSS imaging. Using the median half-light radius found for early-type galaxies at z~0.6 (Trujillo et al. 2007), we estimate that their surface brightness at 2 R_e will be 23.35 mag / sq arcsec. We can achieve a S/N~4.5 per 2x2 pixel resolution element in the F814W filter with an exposure time of t=2400 seconds. This depth will also enable us to measure faint tidal features down to 24 mag / sq arcsec with S/N ~ 2.5. We will obtain two exposures of each target using a two-point, sub-pixel dither pattern to reject hot pixels and cosmic rays while improving spatial resolution. Guide star acquisition will require 6 minutes. Filter changes, other camera setup, readout, and one small angle maneuver for dithering will take 5 minutes for each pair of exposures. In total, 11 minutes are required for overhead, leaving 40 minutes of integration time per orbit.
