Flohic University of California - Irvine N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract We propose to obtain UV the spectra of the Ly-alpha and Mg II lines of 13 SDSS quasars whose H-beta lines are offset by 1000-4000 km/s from their systemic redshifts. Such lines have been suggested to originate in recoiling or close binary black holes. However these interpretations are not unique and UV spectroscopy, possible only with the HST, can discriminate between competing possibilities. Identifying such systems is extremely important in the context of scenarios for galaxy formation and evolution and in view of recent predictions from numerical relativity. Close binary black holes represent an apparently inevitable stage in the merger of two massive galaxies. The subsequent merger of the members of the binary is expected to produce a recoiling black hole in some fraction of cases. Thus, the census of such systems, their environments, and hosts can constrain some of the more uncertain parameters in evolutionary models. But before we can find them in any numbers, we need to evaluate the candidates known so far. This is the goal of our proposal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Our 13 proposed targets, have V magnitudes in the range 16.6 < V < 17.9 and redshifts in the range 0.12 < z < 0.58. Thus we cover a range of approximately a factor of 30 in luminosity. We will observe all objects with COS, each in a 1-orbit visit, to obtain spectra of their Ly-alpha lines. We will also observe 8 of them (those with z < 0.23) with STIS, each in a 1-orbit visit, to obtain spectra of their Mg II lines. To observe the Ly-alpha lines we will use COS/FUV/G140L for 8 objects with z < 0.23 and COS/NUV/G230L for 5 objects with 0.39 < z < 0.58. A single tilt of the COS/G230L grating (central wavelength 2950 Angstrom, covering the windows 1649-2051 Angstrom and 2749-3151 Angstrom) will give us the spectrum of the Ly-alpha line for all the higher-redshift objects. All targets are included in the guide star catalog (GSC2.3) therefore, their 12299( 6) - 17-May-2011 19:13:03 - [ 2] coordinates have uncertainties of 0.2-0.3 arcsec. In view of this, and following the advice of the contact scientist, we will acquire the targets with COS using ACQ/IMAGE. This is very advantageous since we avoid ACQ/SEARCH and save a significant amount of time. As a safety check we have collected the GALEX FUV and NUV magnitudes of these targets and used them to obtain the count rates from the COS acquisition ETC. The FUV magnitudes fall between 17.43 and 20.58 and the NUV magnitudes between 17.21 and 19.90. Thus, we can carry out the ACQ/IMAGE procedure with MIRRORB for the brighter objects and MIRRORA for the fainter ones. For the 8 objects in the lower-redshift group we will also use STIS/CCD/G430L to observe the Mg II lines (for the 5 higher-redshift objects, the Mg II spectra have been obtained from the ground). In each visit we employ a 3-step dither pattern along the slit (step size 0.35 arcsec or 7 pix) to mitigate the possible effects of hot pixels, cosmic rays, etc. To acquire the targets with STIS we will use the standard point-source acquisition sequence with the CCD. Since we are using the 52x0.2 arcsec aperture, we will not need an ACQ/PEAK sequence.
