Such mergers have long been thought to occur, but they are so rare that this is the first one ever observed while it happened. Stellar mergers are predicted to produce pre-merger mass loss in addition to mass loss from the outburst at the time of merger. We have discovered a ~3.5 arcsecond elongated feature at 3.6 and 4.5 microns in archival Spitzer/IRAC survey images, which extends directly from V1309 Sco. The images were obtained 11 months before the outburst. At the estimated distance of V1309 Sco, the extended material is ~10, 000 AU in size. High resolution imaging presents the first opportunity to determine important information about both pre-merger and merger-outburst mass loss, which will be valuable in testing and refining merger models and will have general implications for stellar cluster evolution models. Spitzer/IRAC resolution is insufficient to learn details of this feature's morphology. This object has never been imaged at subarcsecond resolution. Ground-based spectra suggest that the extended material should have a complex morphology influenced by multiple mass ejections and possibly a jet. Our observations will test theoretical predictions that mergers should have significant pre-merger mass loss. We select filters to resolve and measure emission from shocked features, which we will use in conjunction with shock models and diagnostics to determine or put limits on the densities, speeds, and temperatures of both the pre-merger and post-merger ejecta which are expected to be now colliding. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will take images.
