PI: Dr. Beth Biller Max-Planck-Institut fur Astronomie, Y Heidelberg ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract In the last two years, discoveries of the very coolest brown dwarfs (T<800 K) have accelerated, due to results from WISE, UKIDSS, and other IR surveys. These objects close the gap in mass between brown dwarfs and planets -- indeed many of them have planetary masses. Any companions around such an object would certainly be among the lowest mass imaged to date. Here we propose to obtain HST WFC3 IR imaging of newly discovered >T8 dwarfs to search for planetary mass companions to these objects. Any companion discovered to these objects will be a key benchmark object for models and will eventually yield a dynamical mass. We will also be able to place the first constraints to date on the binary fraction for >T8 cool brown dwarfs. For our sample with typical estimated distances of 10-15 pc, WFC3's 0.13" IR platescale will allow us to probe equal magnitude binaries down to separations of 0.2", corresponding to physical separations of 2-3 AU. In order to clearly distinguish cool substellar/planetary mass companions from background stars, we propose observations in the F127M and the F138M filters, since true cool companions should show deep water absorption features at 1.4 um. HST WFC3 is the only instrument in the world capable of observing reliably in both of these filters, since the bandpass of the F139M water filter is often unobservable from the ground due to telluric water absorption. Additionally, more than half of our sample is unobservable from the ground, due to the lack of suitable NGS AO guide stars or LGS AO tip-tilt stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Here we propose to obtain WFC3 infrared channel SNAP imaging for a subset of 34 newly discovered >=T8 dwarfs. High contrasts are absolutely unnecessary for this survey, as these objects are already intrinsically faint and any likely detectable companion will be near equal magnitude (i.e. any companion will not have Delta mag greater than 2-3, realistically.) While the WFC3 IR channel has a comparatively coarse platescale of 0.13'', this should not affect our science goals, as our sample has typical estimated distances of 10-15 pc, affording us excellent physical resolution. With the undersampled WFC3 PSF (FWHM~0.13''), we should be able to detect Delta mag=2-3 binaries down to separations of ~0.2", corresponding to separations of 2-3 AU. Any candidate within 1'' is very likely to be a true companion; For instance, for SCH 1609-2007B, a 0.14'' brown dwarf companion to a very low mass star (Biller et al. 2011), the likelihood that SCR 1609-2007B is a background object is ~2.6x10^−6 (adopting the approach of Brandner et al. 2000). 12873( 2) - 10-Jul-2012 16:49:02 - [ 2] In order to clearly distinguish cool substellar/planetary mass companions from background stars, we propose observations in the F127M and the F138M filters. A true cool companion (SpT>=T0) will be considerably brighter in F127M vs. F139M due to a deep water absorption feature at 1.4 um, whereas a background star should be comparably bright in both filters. Thus F138M - F127M colors can be used to determine if a candidate companion is indeed substellar/planetary mass. Use of WFC3's capability to image in the F139M water filter is essential for this work, as this will allow us to clearly distinguish between true substellar companions and background stars. HST WFC3 is the only instrument in the world capable of observing reliably in both of these filters, since the bandpass of the F139M water filter is often unobservable from the ground due to telluric water absorption. Even observing a subset of our targets will provide a valuable scientific result and constraints on the binarity of these extraordinarily cool objects. For each target we thus request 1 orbit for deep imaging in the F127M and F139M bands. We will use the recommended line dithering patterns to allow removal of hot pixels and improve sampling of the PSF. Given the large WFC3 overheads associated with dumping the buffer for short exposures, we will use 349 s exposures in all cases. In full frame mode, taking 2 dither positions in 2 filters with exposure times of 349 s each will take ~35 minutes (24 minutes of integration time and 11 minutes of overheads). The 5-sigma limits of our proposed observations (for 2 dithers of 349 s exposures) are 24.1 and 23.8 mags in F127M and F139M, respectively. These sensitivity limits will easily allow for detection of planetary mass companions similar to CFBDSIR J1458+1013AB (J=21.7, H=22.5, Liu et al. 2011). We do not expect any of our science targets to saturate in this exposure time. However, even if slight saturation occurs, it is not a a concern, as the WFC IR channel provides every read up the ramp -- saturated reads can thus be discarded and only the unsaturated reads used.
