Stassun Vanderbilt University N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract Understandig how stars form and evolve to reach the main sequence is a key focus area in modern astronomical research. In particular, understanding the rotational evolution of stars during the pre-main sequence phase and how these young stars interact with their surrounding accretion disks is critical. Observations suggest that accretion disks can strongly influence the rotation of the central star which in turn affacts how the star and disk interact. This interaction determines how matter accretes onto the star and may thereby play a role in setting the final stellar mass and may even help determine the final close orbits of inward migrating giant planets. As a result, this star-disk interaction has implications for many key areas in astronomy. Magnetospheric accretion and disk-locking are two key ideas in low mass star formation studies. While the magnetospheric accretion paradigm is well accepted, the related notion of disk-locking (the idea that the star-disk interaction leads to a relatively slow equilibrium stellar rotation rate as opposed to the star continuing to spin up) remains highly controversial. We propose to critically test the predictions of disk-locking and to look for evolution of this pheonmena by measuring the accretion properties of a large sample of young stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster. Combining these measurements with already determined values for the stellar mass, radius, and rotation period will permit the most careful study to date of this phenomena. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Defining the Sample: There are a large number of well-characterized PMS stars in Orion which provide an ideal sample for the purposes of this experiment. Indeed, the number of ONC stars for which P_rot has been measured (Stassun et al. 1999; Herbst et al. 2002), and for which M_* and R_* have been determined (Hillenbrand 1997; Da Rio et al. 2009, 2010), is nearly 400. However, the analysis we propose is complicated in the ONC by virtue of the strong hydrogen emission from the H II region in which the stars are immersed, which will contribute at varying levels to the Balmer jump and line emission. This necessitates (a) minimizing the amount of nebular contamination, and (b) accurate nebular subtraction. The high spatial resolution of HST/STIS is thus key to the success of this experiment, 12995( 6) - 01-Aug-2012 14:21:59 - [ 2] permitting a small slit and allowing the nebular emission along the slit to be measured very close to the star. This ability to use the narrow HST PSF to remove nebular background was one of the key motivating factors behind the HST ACS Treasuty imaging survey of the ONC (GO-10246) of which K.G. Stassun was a Co-I. All these considerations emphasize the fact that choosing our study sample carefully is critical. We have measured the stellar-to-nebular contrast ratio in the immediate vicinity of all 400 candidates using flux-calibrated images obtained at the WIYN 0.9m telescope, and have limited our study sample to only those stars whose local nebular brightness in 1 square arcsec is at least 1 mag fainter than the stellar brightness. Owing to the high spatial resolution of HST, this results in the nebular flux being at least ~ 50X below that of the stellar continuum in a spectrum taken with the STIS 0.5" slit. We wish to emphasize that this is a primary motivation for seeking to do this experiment with HST/STIS. In typical seeing conditions from the ground, nebular contamination could amount to as much as 40% of the Balmer jump signal we seek to measure. As our goal is to test a theory based on accretion, we must furthermore ensure that our stars are in fact accreting from circumstellar disks. Using the near-IR measurements of Hillenbrand et al. (1998), we have selected only targets with at least 0.35 mag of excess (I-K) color. This amply ensures not only the presence of a disk, but active accretion as well (e.g. Stassun et al. 2001). From this subset of the available targets, we have selected 93 stars that are bright enough to each be observed in less than 1/2 of one HST orbit, allowing them to be observed as SNAP targets. Observation Details: All 93 targets in the target list will be observed in the same manner, with exposure times being short enough that they can all be done as typical SNAP objects (i.e. less than 1/2 orbit per object). Suitable template star observations already exist in the HST archive. We will use STIS with the G430L grating to observe the 2900 - 5700 A region, which includes the Balmer jump in its spectral range, and the 52" X 0.5" slit. The spectral resolution supplied with this setup is comparable to that in the Valenti, Basri, & Johns-Krull (1993) study, whose technique we are emulating. Given the strength of the Balmer jump emission, S/N ~ 30 is sufficient, and requires at most 1/2 orbit for the faintest targets in the sample (using the STIS exposure time calculator). For example, a typical target is a mid-K star with B = 15 mag. To achieve S/N = 30 at 3650 A requires 90 sec, assuming a blackbody spectral energy distribution of T = 10000K for the accretion shock emission (Valenti, Basri, & Johns-Krull 1993). Owing to the high spatial resolution of HST, the nebular contamination will be at most 1-2% (see above), which is negligible compared to the typical Balmer jump of ~100%. 12995( 6) - 01-Aug-2012 14:21:59 -
