This has provided greater overlap with stars known to host extrasolar planets via RV surveys. New studies have therefore investigated how the different properties of host stars, exoplanets, and debris disks may be correlated, with the objective of giving empirical support to competing theories of planet formation and evolution. One such emerging correlation is that stars with only low mass planets are more likely to host prominent debris disks than stars that have at least one giant planet. If true, then M dwarfs should have abundant debris disks given that they more frequently have low mass planetary systems. However, the information needed to critically test these ideas is lacking. For most systems, the presence of an outer planet with >30 Earth masses has not been observationally tested, nor are there many M dwarf debris disks available for detailed scrutiny. Here we propose to use STIS coronagraphy to image for the first time the debris disks around three nearby stars in optical scattered light. Searching for sharp dust belt structures indirectly tests for the existence of outer planets that are otherwise undetectable by RV or adaptive optics planet searches. Moreover, two of our target stars are the most recently discovered M dwarf debris disks, both closer to the Sun than AU Mic. The scattered light observations of these two targets would present a major advance in characterizing how M dwarf debris disks co-evolve with planets under different stellar environments. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ This program attempts to resolve the dusty debris disks around three nearby M dwarfs using STIS coronagraphy. 61 Vir and GJ 581 have been resolved with Herschel in the far-infrared such that the position angle of the disk midplane is available to constrain the ORIENT range. LP 876-10 (Fomalhaut C) has no 13725( 6) - 01-May-2015 12:13:16 - [ 2] ORIENT constraints because it was not resolved with Herschel. To obtain PSF reference images we require at least two stars (science target and PSF reference) to be observed near-contemporaneously. The two stars should be (a) near each other in the sky (also necessary to improve scheduling windows), and, (b) with similar B-V color. These observational constraints are necessary to minimize star-to-star PSF variations due to stellar color or thermal effects on the observatory. GJ 581 and LP 876-10 have very red B-V colors [1.68 mag vs. 1.15] and to maximize observing efficiency we choose a single PSF star HD 191849 that has an intermediate B-V color [1.4 mag] and is nearby in the sky. GJ 581 and LP 876-10 will share a PSF star and the observing sequence will be Target #1 -> PSF -> Target #2 in a consecutive 5-orbit block (using a SEQUENCE within 5 ORBITS constraint). 61 Vir and the PSF reference star will be occulted at the WEDGEB0.6 position with bar width 0.6''. We request a PSF target change. Instead of HD 130693 as proposed in Phase I, we find that HD 101259 is a better match in B-V color to 61 Vir. HD 101259 has no HST Archive data and therefore it is not a duplication. The fainter stars GJ 581 and LP 876-10 will be occulted at the bent finger with width ~0.3''. The bent finger (BAR 5) is a newly supported coronagraphic mode for STIS that is ideal for fainter targets such as GJ 581 and LP 876-10 (Gaspar & Schneider, GO-12923). We will acquire the targets behind BAR5 using a POS-TARG from BAR10. After studying the data obtained with GO-12923, we adjust the POS-TARG values so that the stars will be moved to the tip of the finger. The POS-TARG values may be adjusted after further consultations concerning the GO-12923 data. The exposure times are adjusted to achieve approximately 100K elec in the brightest pixels. For reference, we analyzed the results of STIS coronagraphic programs GO-12228 and GO-12923. All exposures will have GAIN=4. To maximize the total accumulated integration time on each target, we use a subarray SIZEAXIS2=400.
