It will provide an overall assessment of the evolution in Lyman alpha luminosity at the lowest redshifts and allowed detailed studies of the physical processes that shape the Lyman alpha profile and govern escape in multi-phase, kinematic media. It will also provide a serendipitous search for star-forming galaxies with high LyC escape fractions that are analogous to those commonly invoked as being responsible for initiating and sustaining the epoch of reionization. The SNAP survey proposed here employing the G140L mode of COS offers a highly efficient means to examine the Lyman alpha emission properties of our candidate emitters and to inform our choice of objects that could warrant deeper integrations in future observations. These data have high UV legacy value and will be of broad interest to the star-forming galaxy community, so we have elected to waive the proprietary period. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ LyaSNAP_PhaseII_cy22 Observing description Science Goals: We know more about the properties of Lya emission from star-forming galaxies at intermediate and high redshifts than we do about those at low redshift. At much lower redshifts z ~ 0.02, where the associated look-back time is ~ 0.3 Gyrs, there are no commensurate spectroscopic surveys. A survey of the low redshift regime provides unique access to a pool of relatively bright, yet compact, Lya emitting candidates for detailed studies of the physical processes that shape the Lya profile and govern escape. With the advent of the merged GALEX and Sloan Digital Sky Survey databases, large numbers of suitable Lya candidate galaxies can easily be found. We have used simple data mining techniques to identify a ready population of 75 star forming galaxies in the redshift range of 0.02 <= z <= 0.2 that in a 600 13761( 8) - 10-Feb-2015 17:30:20 - [ 2] second observation will yield a signal-to-noise per Angstrom > 5 in the 1300 Angstrom continuum, using the G140L mode of COS. They form the basis of an ideal SNAP survey of low redshift emitters that can be drawn on at random to efficiently build a statistically significant sample. With an anticipated SNAP completion fraction of 1/3 we expect to end up with ~ 25 objects. This sample will allow us to address compelling questions regarding the nature of the Lya escape process in multi-phased interstellar environments. We will also search for potential low redshift analogs to the high redshift galaxies that are thought to be responsible for ushering in and sustaining the epoch of reionization. Targets: Our SNAP target list was assembled from the SDSS Query portal, CasJobs, wherein Structured Query Language (SQL) code was used to search the merged catalogue of sources common to the 6th GALEX and 7th SDSS data releases. The primary SQL selection criteria were for galaxies with z > 0.02, as determined from the SDSS spectroscopy, along with a constraint on the estimated flux at the redshifted Lyman edge to be in excess of 3e-15 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 Ang^-1 as determined from a power law extrapolation of the GALEX FUV and NUV source fluxes. This constraint was imposed before accounting for extension of our objects relative to the size of the COS 2.5" entrance aperture. To insure the safety of the COS detectors, we must determine whether the strength of a Lya emission line will exceed the local countrate limit of 0.67 per pixel for the COS detector. Fortunately this is a simple estimate given that we know the GALEX FUV flux and SDSS Balmer line fluxes. Model spectral energy distributions were created using the power law extrapolation f_lam = f_1530(lam/1530)^beta where beta = log(f_1530/f_2267)/log(1530/2267) and adding to, it at the appropriate redshift, a Lya emission line F_Lya = 33F_Hb, which is a conservatively high Case A recombination line ratio estimate. All our targets are extended with respect to the 2.5" diameter of the COS entrance aperture, so we attenuate the spectral estimates by the ratio of the solid angle of the COS 2.5" aperture to a conservative estimate of the object solid angle based on a quadrature subtraction of the object psf from the intrinsic GALEX pdf and assuming the deconvolved pdf was a gaussian sampled by the 2.5" COS aperture. We have used these spectra, with units of ergs cm^-2 s^-1 Ang^-1 arcsec^-2 as inputs to the ETC, so as to estimate SN ratios for the target acquisition and spectroscopic observations for all 75 targets. The ETC IDs have been provided for all these observations. No local or global count rate violations were identified by the ETC using these spectra. Our target coordinates were taken from the SLOAN database. The APT22 target confirmation tool was used verify that all the pointing are good to 0.4". Consequently, we have elected to follow a very simple observing sequence of a image acquisition using the NUV detector followed by two 300 second exposures in the G140L at fp-pos=3 and fp-pos=4. As time is critical for SNAP programs we have elected to use only two fp-pos positions. Our targets have varying degrees of concentration but for the most part they 13761( 8) - 10-Feb-2015 17:30:20 - [ 3] will be extended, filling the 2.5" aperture, but exhibiting some structure. This, of course, will result in a broadening of the Lya line over any and above any velocity structure in the source along with intrinsic lsf of the spectrograph. The NUV Acq/Images will be used to assess the degree of source structure broadening. As such we do not really require implementation of the second check box targeting maneuver, we only require knowledge of what is in the aperture as presented to the G140L. Elimination of the targeting maneuver from the standard NUV Acq/Image sequence would be acceptable in the interests of saving time. Since knowledge is more important than a fine-tuned peak up, we have imposed a SN limit of only 10 (as opposed to the recommended 40) for the 9x9 pixel checkbox bright peak locator. This is an aspirational limit as there are a few cases where this criteria was not met. In these cases we have limited the NUV exposures to 100 seconds. The reduced SN for the check box location algorithm in these instances is acceptable. The elimination of the targeting shift step is desirable, if possible. Most of the objects will use MirrorA for the NUV Acq/Image, but 8 will use MirrorB, as the GALEX-option-BOT claimed violations of the local NUV detector limit of 50 counts s^-1 pixel^-1. Use of MirrorB for these 8 (Visits 12, 20, 40, 41, 47, 50, 53, 54) all resulted in limiting the NUV exposures to 100 seconds. The BOT finds no stars for visits 5, 38, 45, 57, 61. These fields are not blank and have been observed by SDSS and GALEX. Targets where the redshifted Lya emission line was less than or equal to about 1280 Angstroms (z=0.053) are to be observed using mode CENWAVE=1105; those significantly above z=0.053 are to be observed with CENWAVE=1280. Some objects with lines close to 1280 may have a slight truncation in the fp-pos=3 position depending on the source velocity structure, but will be well away from the edge with the ~20 Angstrom shift provided by the fp-pos=4 position, where the cenwave close to 1260. Combining the two step NUV Acq/Image process of around 500 to 600 seconds with the 600 seconds of spectroscopic observations and other sundry overheads yields a total on target time for each object of ~ 25 minutes. Feel free to add time to the spectroscopy to fill gaps in the scheduling as needed, but please do not subtract from the spectroscopy time. If you do require a few extra seconds to squeeze in an observation, then be our guest to eliminate the second targeting step for the NUV Acq/Image (if possible) or to reduce these exposure times slightly.
