Deep UV spectra have revealed very prominent emission from nebular CIII] and CIV, pointing to an extreme radiation field in reionization-era systems. This is a significant departure from typical galaxy spectra at z~2-3. The importance of these UV lines will increase greatly in the near future, as they will likely be the only way we can characterize the spectra of the most distant (z>10) galaxies JWST will be able to detect. Unfortunately we are currently completely unprepared to interpret these features, in large part because UV templates of nearby star forming systems with very hard ionizing spectra are absent. Here we propose to remedy this shortcoming by obtaining COS UV spectra of 10 nearby star forming galaxies that are known to have hard ionizing spectra from their optical spectra. Using the G160M and G185M gratings, we will characterize the strength of four diagnostic UV lines (CIV, He II, OIII], CIII]). The data will provide new insight into the nature of massive stars that power high ionization emission lines, demonstrating whether nearby star forming systems ever produce UV equivalent widths as large as are now being observed at high redshift. The spectra will be used to calibrate the UV spectral models that will become commonplace in the JWST era. If this UV spectral database is not obtained while COS is still operating, there are bound to be large systematic uncertainties in our understanding of the nature of the most distant galaxies that JWST finds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Goals: We will obtain target acquisition NUV images and FUV+NUV COS spectroscopy for star forming knots in ten galaxies. The galaxies have been selected based on the presence of He II 4686 emission in SDSS optical spectra. Coordinates of the targets are matched to the centroid of the SDSS optical spectra and are on the ICRS reference frame. The galaxies will be acquired using acq/image with COS/NUV. Based on the brightness of the targets in GALEX, we will use Mirror B for all but one target. For SDSSJ094252+354726, the GALEX NUV flux density is sufficient to allow an acquisition with Mirror A. After acquisition, each source will be observed with the G160M and G185M gratings 14168( 4) - 04-Nov-2015 17:16:27 - [ 2] using the PSA of COS. The central wavelength of both gratings has been chosen to place desired emission lines into the observable bandpass given the known redshift of each target. Exposures are take using TIME-TAG mode, the flash=yes setting, and with four focal plane positions per central wavelength. Orbits: We have been awarded 20 orbits for our observations. Integration times have been chosen based on the known continuum brightness and expected emission line strengths. For the acq/image, we have chosen integration times that will deliver S/N=40. For the science exposures, the total integration time in each grating should deliver S/N=4-6 per resolution element, sufficient to measure the equivalent widths of the relevant emission lines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 14168( 4) -
