Cohen Arizona State University N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract We will test whether at z=2 highly accreting central supermassive black holes in galaxies are caused by major galaxy mergers. Though it has been shown in past years that mergers are not the main cause for the bulk of BHs at z<2, it is both possible and plausible that this can still be the case at the highest accretion rates. The targeted population (log(M_BH/M_sun)~8.5; L/L_Edd>70%) at z=2 is the most directly accessible laboratory for the earlier Universe where QSOs are known to accrete near or above the Eddington limit, yet it is the most distant one for direct diagnostics of morphological major merging signs in the pre-JWST era. We propose to observe 21 highly accreting QSOs at z~2 with L/L_Edd>70% and analyse their host galaxy morphologies w.r.t. the incidence of strong distortions as proxy for recent or ongoing major galaxy merging. We will compare this with the strong distortion rate of >300 inactive galaxies at same z and M* from the publicly available CANDELS+ERS dataset. For this purpose we will remove the bright nucleus in the QSOs and mock up characteristic point source residuals in the centers of all inactive galaxies. A "blind" ranking of the distortion state of the combined two (host) galaxy samples based on a visual classification by at least 10 galaxy experts will allow to generate a bias-free statistic of merger fraction in both samples. Assuming a merger fraction of 20% for the inactive galaxies we will be able to detect an enhancement to at least 50% for QSOs at >99.7% significance. If found, this would immediately imply that major merging is a significant or even dominating mechanism to fuel the highest accretion rate QSOs in the early Universe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 14262( 2) - 21-Jul-2015 13:16:21 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ All the quasars in this program have magnitudes in the range H=16-17 mag (Vega). ETC run: http://etc.stsci.edu/etc/results/WFC3IR.im.731999/ For each target, we take 4 exposures of 600 seconds each, using the STEP100 readout sequence. This allows ~6 reads before saturation of the PSF core, which occurs at ~90 seconds, and a total of 12 reads for non-saturated pixels tracing fainter host galaxy structures at 0.5-1.0 arcsec separations. The four exposures are dithered using a box pattern that: 1) uses half-pixel steps, to allow accurate reconstruction of the diffraction-limited image 2) has a larger than standard spacing (~4x4 arcsec) so that persistence from the saturated PSF core will not contaminate the object flux during further exposures in the sequence. We have ensured (with bright object tool and SDSS imaging) that persistence from other nearby objects will not contaminate the quasar flux, including due to the larger-than-standard dithering (ie we rejected a few targets that were too close to bright Galactic stars). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 14262( 2) -
