PI: Prof. Roger Romani Stanford University Y CoI: Dr. Pat Slane Harvard University N CoI: Dr. Andrew Green Anglo-Australian Observatory N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract The nearby single millisecond pulsar J2124-3358 shows a unique Halpha bow shock around a swept-back, asymmetric X-ray trail. Our ACIS exposure measures fine structure near the pulsar, discerning the spin/polar jet axis from the equatorial torus. Spectra measure the PSR cap heating and PWN synchrotron cooling. A search for moving knots in the PWN can constrain the post-shock flow speed. Comparison with our ground optical imaging and spectroscopy measures the 3-D shock geometry and is enhanced by an HST Halpha image resolving the sub-arcsecond shock apex. These permit accurate modeling of the pulsar wind momentum distribution, a measurement of the pulsar moment of inertia and a novel test of the recycling+evaporation scenario for isolated millisecond pulsars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ WFC3/UVIS exposures of a faint pulsar bow shock. 2600s F656N + 100s+F606W for each of two orbits. We will place the critical nebula apex near the read-out node and may post-flash for improved CTE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 14364( 3) - 20-Oct-2015 12:55:33 - [ 2] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 PSRJ2124-335 EXT-MEDIUM, EMISSION RA=21H24M43.8535S +/- 0.0001", J2000 V = 26 +/- 2 8 LINE NEBULA DEC=-33D58'44.67" +/- 0.0001" Reference Frame: ICRS Extended: YES Comments: Diffuse Halpha nebula Epoch of Position RA proper motion (seconds of time/yr) DEC Proper Motion (arcsec/yr) Annual Parallax (arcsec) 2000 -0.0011351736022403463 -0.05034 0.0031 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 14364( 3) - 20-Oct-2015 12:55:33 - [ 3] Visit: 01 Visit Requirements: ORIENT 5D TO 30 D On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exp | Target | Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Num | Name | Config | Mode | or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| (Total) | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 PSRJ2124-33 WFC3/UVI ACCUM UVIS-CENT F656N FLASH=8 1 2600 S POS TARG 70, 70 58 S ER see below (2569 S) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2 PSRJ2124-33 WFC3/UVI ACCUM UVIS-CENT F606W FLASH=6 1 200 S POS TARG 70, 70 58 S ER see below (170 S) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 PSRJ2124-33 WFC3/UVI ACCUM UVIS-CENT F656N FLASH=8 1 2600 S POS TARG 70.099, 70.106 58 S ER see below (2640 S) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4 PSRJ2124-33 WFC3/UVI ACCUM UVIS-CENT F606W FLASH=6 1 200 S POS TARG 70.099, 70.106 58 S ER see below (211 S) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sub Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Target | Exp |Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Cent.|Primary |Secondary |Iteration |CR-SPLIT |Orbit |Duration Name | Num |Config | Mode | or FOV |Element |Wave.|Pattern Pos |Pattern Pos |Num |Num |Number | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PSRJ2124-3358 1 WFC3/UVI ACCUM UVIS-CEN F656N none none none none 1 2569.0 S S TER PSRJ2124-3358 2 WFC3/UVI ACCUM UVIS-CEN F606W none none none none 1 170.0 S S TER PSRJ2124-3358 3 WFC3/UVI ACCUM UVIS-CEN F656N none none none none 2 2640.0 S S TER PSRJ2124-3358 4 WFC3/UVI ACCUM UVIS-CEN F606W none none none none 2 211.0 S S TER 14364( 3) - 20-Oct-2015 12:55:33 - [ 4] Summary Form for Proposal 14364 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apertures UVIS-CENTER ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Configurations WFC3/UVIS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Opmodes ACCUM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Optional Parameters FLASH=6, FLASH=8 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Requirements ORIENT 5D TO 30 D, POS TARG 70, 70, POS TARG 70.099, 70.106 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Spectral Elements F606W, F656N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Target Names PSRJ2124-3358 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
