Fruchter Space Telescope Science Institute N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract We request a single orbit of WFC/IR observations of the soft gamma repeater SGR 1935+2154. Our HST observations during a previous outburst have identified a candidate counterpart while the source was bright. A renewed period of intense activity has just begun, and it is likely that the source is now once again bright enough for a secure high signal to noise detection. Our new observation will enable a direct measurement of the proper motion of the source, allowing us trace it back to its place of birth, or put stringent limits on birth locations. Simultaneously the observations will also track the IR behaviour during outburst, and determine how it compares to its X-ray flux. The source is too faint for ground based observaitons, and these observations can only be obtained while the source is in outburst. Given the typical long quiescent periods for SGRs this new outburst may well represent the only opportunity to conduct these observations in the remaining lifetime of HST. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to obtain observations of the soft gamma-repeater SGR 1935+2154 which is currently in outburst. We will utilize the same approach as in our previous observaitons of this source, in particular we will use a 4 point dither in the F140W filter (4x600s of observations). We will use a position angle of 205.219 degrees to put the source at 90 degrees to our previous observations such that diffraction spikes from bright stars overlay. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 14502( 3) - 19-May-2016 19:20:02 - [ 2] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2 SGR1935+2154 STAR, NEUTRON STAR RA=19H34M55.6800S, J2000 V = 25 +/- 5 DEC=+21D53'48.20" Reference Frame: ICRS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 14502( 3) - 19-May-2016 19:20:02 - [ 3] Patterns ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pattern_Number: 1 Primary_Pattern Secondary_Pattern Pattern_Type WFC3-IR-DITHER-BOX-MIN Pattern_Purpose DITHER Number_Of_Points 4 Point_Spacing 0.572 Line_Spacing 0.365 Coordinate_Frame POS-TARG Pattern_Orient 18.528 Angle_Between_Sides 74.653 Center_Pattern NO ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 14502( 3) - 19-May-2016 19:20:02 - [ 4] Visit: 01 Visit Requirements: SCHED 100%; ORIENT 205.218D TO 205.219 D On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exp | Target | Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Num | Name | Config | Mode | or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| (Total) | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 SGR1935+215 WFC3/IR MULTIAC IR F140W NSAMP=12, SAMP-SEQ=STEP100 1 DEF PATTERN 1 1 4 CUM (2396.929 S) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sub Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Target | Exp |Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Cent.|Primary |Secondary |Iteration |CR-SPLIT |Orbit |Duration Name | Num |Config | Mode | or FOV |Element |Wave.|Pattern Pos |Pattern Pos |Num |Num |Number | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SGR1935+2154 1 WFC3/IR MULTIAC IR F140W 1 none none none 1 N/A CUM SGR1935+2154 1 WFC3/IR MULTIAC IR F140W 2 none none none 1 N/A CUM SGR1935+2154 1 WFC3/IR MULTIAC IR F140W 3 none none none 1 N/A CUM SGR1935+2154 1 WFC3/IR MULTIAC IR F140W 4 none none none 1 N/A CUM 14502( 3) - 19-May-2016 19:20:02 - [ 5] Summary Form for Proposal 14502 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apertures IR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Configurations WFC3/IR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Opmodes MULTIACCUM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Optional Parameters NSAMP=12, SAMP-SEQ=STEP100 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Requirements ORIENT 205.218D TO 205.219 D, PATTERN 1 1, SCHED 100% ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Spectral Elements F140W ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Target Names SGR1935+2154 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
