Stellar and planetary fields may interact for close-in planets, resulting in enhanced stellar activity of the host star and potentially affecting the habitability of planets in the system. A recent study of low-mass stars (France et al. 2016) found evidence for star-planet interactions (SPI) between the stellar transition region/corona and the planets. This work showed a correlation between high-temperature (T_{form} >~ 10^{5} K) stellar emission lines (N V, C IV, and Si IV) and the ratio of planetary mass to the orbital semi-major axis, M_{plan}/a_{plan}. However, that work focused on a limited number of M and K stars. We propose to observe a large number of exoplanet hosting G and K dwarfs to expand the parameter space to a wider range of stellar mass and M_{plan}/a_{plan}. Given the combination of spectroscopic sensitivity and the rich suite of spectral diagnostics in the COS G130M band, this program can be carried out with ~1800 second SNAP observations of G and K dwarf host stars within 50 pc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ COS G130M Observations: In order to obtain a robust census of line formation tem- peratures in the upper atmospheres of cool stars, we require spectral coverage from 1150 to 1450 Ang: the G130M mode of COS provides the necessary wavelength coverage, the highest sensitivity of any spectral mode at these wavelengths aboard HST, and the spectral resolu- tion (R ~ 16, 000) to cleanly separate and resolve the emission lines. The proposed SNAP sample was extracted from the exoplanets.org database of confirmed exoplanetary systems. The orig- 14633( 11) - 21-Sep-2017 15:22:47 - [ 2] inal list was selected for all G and K dwarfs with confirmed exoplanetary systems inside 50 pc, which yielded 150 targets. The 50 pc limit was derived from previous COS G130M observations of the solar type exoplanet host star HD 209458 that demonstrated that COS observations of a relatively inactive G dwarf could yield high-enough S/N per resolution ele- ment to permit spectral line fitting in a single orbit to roughly this distance, We placed additional brightness restrictions on the sample such that the stars must be brighter than V = 8.5 magnitude to enable a robust detection of the brightest lines in an 1800s exposure, but fainter than V = 5 to ensure that COS instrument safety is maintained (see below). This resulted in a sample of 80 sources (67 G stars and 13 K stars), all of which either have measured Ca II H and K activity indices (in the literature or data retrievable from the HIRES and/or HARPS archives) which provide another constraint on the induced activity in the cooler atmospheric layers.
