Nearby galaxies are concentrated to a band stretching toward the Virgo Cluster. Accurate distances from the tip of the red giant branch method have been obtained for a high fraction of nearby galaxies in every direction on the sky EXCEPT in the Local Sheet in the Virgo sector. This region is particularly interesting because it samples the outer extent of the strong influence of the Virgo Cluster: the cluster zero velocity and zero energy surfaces. Details of the velocity field in this region are sensitive to the mass of the cluster out to large radii, information uniquely available because of the proximity of the Virgo Cluster. The existing limited information suggests there is a pronounced velocity shear across the region. Distances can easily be obtained for the targets with single orbit observations. The observations contribute to an increasingly complete sampling of the resolved stellar populations of nearby galaxies, a compilation of considerable legacy value. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We intent to measure distances to 20 galaxies in the foreground of the Virgo Cluster situated at expected distances around 6-8 Mpc from us. The TRGB method is the best way to determine the distances to nearby galaxies with an accuracy of 5% independent of their morphology. In an old stellar population of a galaxy the Tip of the Red Giant Branch will be at M_I = -4.0, M_V = -2.5 (Da Costa & Armandroff 1990). For a galaxy at 8 Mpc, the TRGB will occur at I = 25.5 and V = 27. The ACS Exposure Time Calculator predicts that exposures of 1000 seconds, CR-split, will give S/N of 5 and 9 in V and I bands respectively. Experience has demonstrated these predictions are realistic. Hence adequate data for the determination of a 14636( 5) - 22-Jul-2016 11:24:47 - [ 2] distance to a target can be obtained within a single orbit. The exposure time will be divided between F814W and F606W filters with 2 frame dithers in each filter. We follow procedures demonstrated in past cycles to be optimal for psf reconstruction. The photometry is carried out with the software package DOLPHOT (http://purcell.as.arizona.edu/dolphot), the successor to HSTPHOT (Dolphin 2000). The RGB tip is identified with a maximum likelihood method that involves the superposition and recovery of synthetic stars to monitor photometric accuracy and completion (Makarov et al. 2006). The TRGB calibration, including camera and filter issues, obscuration, and zero point, follow Rizzi et al. (2007). Results are stored and made available to the public (Jacobs et al. 2009) at the Extragalactic Distance Database (http://edd.ifa.hawaii.edu, select the catalog CMDs/TRGB). We usually produce a color-magnitude diagram of the galaxy within one day of the data being delivered from the archive. Only the cameras on HST have, simultaneously, sufficient spatial resolution, field of view, and photometric/PSF stability to provide the large numbers of TRGB stars per galaxy needed to accomplish this task at these distances. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 14636( 5) -
