The SN is about 10 days before peak, which will be at V ~ 12 mag, making it one of the brightest SN of the decade. This SN represents a rare opportunity to obtain a UV spectroscopic time series for a young/bright SN Ia. With such a UV data set, we will determine the metal abundance of the progenitor star and investigate how that metallicity affects SN distance calibration, one of the largest systematics for SN cosmology. Fortuitously, with only a modest increase in the number of orbits, we can simultaneously obtain a precise Cepheid distance to NGC 5643. While we obtain the UV spectra, we will observe Cepheid variables with WFC3 in parallel. Four years ago, there was another SN Ia, SN 2013aa, in NGC 5643. Therefore this single Cepheid measurement would add 2 SN-Cepheid calibrators, increasing the sample size by 10% with one set of observations! The number of SN-Cepheid calibrators is the largest uncertainty for measuring the local Hubble constant, and we significantly improve the measurement of H0 with a relatively small orbit request. Finally, the location of SN 2013aa falls into our Cepheid fields, allowing for a deep observation of a SN Ia 4 years after explosion. At this epoch, 57Co and 55Fe dominate the SN luminosity, and a measurement of the luminosity at this epoch compared to earlier times constrains the ratio of 56Ni to 57Co and 55Fe generated in the explosion. Those ratios are strongly dependent on the explosion mechanism and progenitor system, and our observations will help distinguish between these scenarios for SN 2013aa. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ 14925( 6) - 21-Mar-2017 00:59:32 - [ 2] We would like to observe the SN as soon as possible.
