Accretion and feedback through the CGM play key roles in our models of the star formation dichotomy in galaxies. Low mass galaxies are thought to accrete gas in cold streams, while high mass galaxies host hot, dense halos that heat incoming gas and prevent its cooling, thereby quenching star formation. HST/COS has provided evidence for cold, metal-poor streams in the halos of star-forming galaxies (consistent with cold accretion). Observations have also demonstrated the presence of cool gas in the halos of passive galaxies, a potential challenge to the cold/hot accretion model. Our proposed observations will target the most massive galaxies and address the origin of the cool CGM gas by measuring the metallicity. This experiment is enabled by our novel approach to deriving metallicities, allowing the use of much fainter QSOs. It cannot be done with archival data, as these rare systems are not often probed along random sight lines. The H I column density (and metallicity) measurements require access to the UV. The large size of our survey is crucial to robustly assess whether the CGM in these galaxies is unique from that of star-forming systems, a comparison that provides the most stringent test of cold-mode accretion/quenching models to date. Conversely, widespread detections of metal-poor gas in these halos will seriously challenge the prevailing theory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ *Target selection: We have selected our LRG-QSO pairs (see Fig. 4) using a combination of the ~1.3 million LRGs with spectroscopic redshifts in the SDSS DR13 CMASS sample (Albareti et al. 2017, Hutchinson et al. 2016) and the SDSS DR7 and DR10 QSO 15075( 7) - 12-Dec-2018 16:35:25 - [ 2] catalogs (Schneider et al. 2010, Paris et al. 2014). We identified pairs with physical separations rho <= 125 kpc (~0.25 Rvir) at the redshift of the LRG. We require 0.3 < zLRG < 0.65 to place both the Lyman limit and Lyman-alpha in the G140L spectrum, providing us with measures of column densities over 16.4 <~ log N(H I) <= 18.3 and log N(H I) > 20. We exclude a small redshift range that places the relevant lines in the Galactic Ly-alpha trough. The QSOs were limited to AB(FUV) < 20 mag from GALEX to ensure we obtain good UV spectra with minimized contamination from higher-redshift LLSs. This magnitude selection does not bias our results, as the LRGs are low enough redshift that an associated Lyman break will not strongly affect the flux within the GALEX FUV band (most will lie outside of the FUV band altogether). We require [z_LRG + 5*sigma(z_QSO)] < z_QSO < [z_LRG+0.5]. The lower limit ensures the QSOs are beyond the LRGs; the upper limit minimizes the chances of losing access to the LRG limit due to higher-redshift LLSs or Lyman-alpha forest blending. Although the FUV criterion should exclude high-z LLSs, we removed sight lines with strong Mg II absorbers in SDSS at z > zLRG. The CMASS sample includes some late-type or star-forming galaxies. We have excluded late-type galaxies from our sample following using the color cut recommended K. Masters et al. (2011), (g-i)_observed > 2.35. We adopt the 50 lowest impact parameter pairs matching these criteria (Fig. 4). Five of these are from archived observations (6/113 of the SDSS-drawn sight lines are from programs 14145/14171; to avoid bias due to their Mg II selection, only 5.3% of our final sample may be from these archival sight lines [3 sight lines]). *Multiplicity and satellites: LRGs are strongly clustered. We will not obtain a large enough sample to adequately probe the impact of multiple LRGs in a halo on the CGM. For this reason, we targeted "isolated" LRGs, rejecting LRGs with a partner within ~2*R_vir. Each LRG will have a multitude of satellites. We will likely not observe the gas directly associated with these satellites. Gauthier & Chen (2011) explored this issue for LRG satellites, finding a probability <2% that a sight line within rho < 150 kpc of an LRG would intercept the gaseous halo of an individual satellite, as their cross section and H I covering factors (Faucher-Giguere et al. 2015) are small. We may, however, observe metal-enriched gas stripped or expelled from these satellites (Huang et al. 2016). This material may be an important source of cool material for the central LRG. Such metal-enriched gas could itself fuel star formation if it can stay cool; our metallicity determinations will shed light on this process. *Target yield: Our requirement to target ~50 QSOs assumes unavoidable (but small) losses that arise from the target selection and the intrinsic properties of QSOs. We estimate ~10% of the observed sight lines will be unusable for our science goals because they will have intervening LLSs at higher redshift [<5%] (from Cycle 18 statistics with allowance for our FUV selection) or the QSOs turn out to have broad absorption lines [~8%] (SDSS spectra of our targets do not show BAL features; even so, our similarly-selected Cycle 18 QSOs had an 8% BAL contamination rate). These losses cannot be avoided before a first UV spectrum is obtained of these QSOs (and these data may ultimately be a boon for BAL practitioners). 15075( 7) - 12-Dec-2018 16:35:25 - [ 3] *Observational design: We will observe each QSO with the COS FUV detector and G140L grating (lambda_c=1105 Ang), which gives coverage over 1150 < lambda < 2300 Ang. This set-up avoids the detector gap present in the lambda_c=1280 Ang configuration shown in Fig. 3, which can be helpful in modeling the LLS absorption, and it ensures none of the Lyman breaks are lost in the gap. (It does incur a 330 s overhead to power down detector segment B, but the advantages outweigh this.) This set-up provides coverage of the H I Lyman limit, Lyman-alpha, and the other Lyman series transitions. Strong metal lines, notably O VI, may be detectable in some LLSs (although when detected they will be saturated). We will use one orbit per target and expect an on-target exposure time of ~2200s for each QSO, split across 2 FP-POS settings. This will provide S/N > 5 per resolution element at the position of the Lyman limit for our faintest targets (although most will be significantly higher). Our lowest S/N spectra will be comparable to the data shown in the bottom panel of Fig. 3, which clearly shows a LLS. This faintest object is captured in the online ETC calculation COS.sp.935962 for a break at ~1420 Ang. This is significantly better than our average Cycle 18 snapshot spectra (longer exposure times) and will provide a very good measure of the Lyman break opacity for the systems even to log N(HI) ~ 16.4, and we will have some sensitivity to ~15.5 through strong Lyman-series lines. While our previous snapshot program was successful, the current experiment cannot be done as a snapshot program. We would require >150 targets to yield sufficient statistics in the final sample. There are not 150 LRG-QSO pairs with separations rho <= 125 kpc and bright enough QSOs to provide sufficient S/N in the lower snapshot exposure times. Going to larger impact parameters does not necessarily help, as the covering factors may be lower at larger impact parameter (Huang et al. 2016). None of our targets pose a risk to the detector, and all are sufficiently bright to provide spectroscopy useable for the detection of LLSs. *Low-resolution metallicities: We will use observations of Mg II/H I (from MODS/COS) to estimate the fraction of the LRG LLSs having metallicities consistent with those expected for cool infalling gas near galaxies. Wotta et al. (2016; see Fig. 2) demonstrate this approach (at the same redshifts as our target galaxies), showing the ionization correction required to estimate [Mg/H] from Mg II/H I is relatively flat over the limited range of ionization parameters found in LLSs. For our proposed program, LRGs with very weak Mg II absorption or non-detections at the limits we reach with LBT/MODS (0.05 Ang, 3*sigma) will all be confined to the lower metallicity branch (Fig. 1), consistent with metallicities expected for infalling gas (Fumagalli et al. 2011a). Furthermore, we can use LBT/PEPSI, Keck/HIRES, VLT/UVES, or Magellan/MIKE to push non-detections as far as [Mg/H] < -3. The bimodal distribution, both in Lehner et al. and with our low-resolution metallicities, is not strongly affected by choice of UV background models (Lehner et al. 2013, Fumagalli et al. 2016). *Acquisition: All acquisitions will use the ACQ/IMAGE in the NUV. The positions from SDSS are 15075( 7) - 12-Dec-2018 16:35:25 - [ 4] good enough for this purpose. All of our target span the range 17.6 < FUV < 20.0 mag and 18.2 < NUV < 22.0 mag. All are QSOs spectroscopically confirmed by SDSS with GALEX magnitudes. Using a QSO template at appropriate redshifts, we find that all but the faintest 4 objects and the brightest 1 can use the same acquisition setup: MIRROR-A + 100 sec exposure time yields SNR>40 in all of those cases. For the single brightest object with FUV=17.6 and NUV=18.1 (object 4), we use MIRROR-B with otherwise the same set-up.
