If this is true, then low-luminosity galaxies at high redshift have to be different from most of the low-luminosity galaxies studied to date at low redshift, which absorb too much of their ionizing radiation. While it is possible that high-z dwarf galaxies have the same metallicity at fixed mass and star-formation rate as low-redshift galaxies, they are different in one key respect. At fixed dark-halo mass, they are probably much denser (having collapsed earlier). This could lead to higher star-formation surface densities more capable of creating cavities in the ISM. But the denser halos of surrounding gas could be harder to clear. There is a critical need for further observations to validate and test physical models for the trends of escaping ionizing continuum with redshift, luminosity, and surface density. JWST will not be able to measure ionizing radiation during the epoch of reionization because the IGM absorbs most of the photons. To prepare for JWST, we need to use the ultraviolet capabilities of HST to measure diverse samples of galaxies at z<3, where we can see the photons and quantify the trends with other galaxy properties. As a complement to other studies, we propose to constrain the Lyman-continuum emission from 8 relatively low-luminosity strongly-lensed galaxies at 1 3.02. The targets all have images in the HLA and we have used photometry on these images to estimate the AB magnitudes in the WFC3 F390W band. We used an isophotal area measured from the existing images to eastimate an aperture radius for the ETC calculations. The objects are expected to be at least two magnitudes fainter in the UV bands with which we are observing them. The BOT tool reveals no sources of concern nearby. In several of the fields there are nearby arcs that are of secondary interest for the proposal. We have selected orientation ranges to keep the secondary targets in the field along with the primary target, and adjusted the positions for two of the targets to lie between the primary and secondary target so that the orientation ranges can be quite large. For the target observed with WFC3 UVIS, we have created four 2-orbit visits with full-orbit exposures and preflash to bring the expected background up to 12 electrons. We implement the UVIS box dither pattern using POS TARGs. We use the UVIS2-C1K1C-CTE aperture to mitigate CTE trailing. 15271( 3) - 06-Mar-2019 14:01:39 - [ 3] For the ACS SBC observations we have planned 2-3 orbit visits. The observations will benefit from having the lowest background. Figure 4.14 of the ACS handbook shows that the dark current increases significantly when the operating temperature gets above 26 C, which happens after the high-voltage has been on for about several hours.
