Kenyon Smithsonian Institution Astrophysical N Observatory ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract There is a discrepancy between the frequency of rocky planets in the inner AU known around Sun-like stars and the frequency of stars observed to be undergoing the collisions that form these planets. The discrepancy may indicate that rocky planets are less common than believed or that they form very differently than we have imagined, producing little or no debris signature. A third, less dramatic possibility is that planet-forming systems retain a tenuous reservoir of gas that whisks away the warm dust (debris) produced by planet-forming collisions. Over the past decade, it has been recognized that fluorescent FUV molecular hydrogen emission is an excellent tracer of gas in the planet forming regions of disks around young stars. Therefore, we will use HST COS with the G130M grating to survey the FUV spectrum between 1140 - 1450 Ang for molecular hydrogen emission from a sample of 30 stars in the 11 Myr old Upper Scorpious star forming region. These data will test whether small amounts of disk gas remove the debris from planet forming collisions, or whether rocky planet formation possibly proceeds much differently than currently thought. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ The goal of this program is to survey a sample of 30 K stars in the Upper Sco star forming region to search for residual gas disks among these stars by detecting molecular hydrogen (H2) emission lines coming from the disk. We will observe each of our target stars in the FUV using HST+COS with the G130M grating. These H2 lines are excited by Ly-alpha and OVI emission. Young stars are very magnetically active and should have sufficient chromospheric emission in these lines to excite H2. COS with the G130M grating provides the highest sensitivity to the narrow H2 lines we seek to observe due to its high effective area and high resolution (R ~ 16, 000). We will use one central wavelength settings (CENWAVE 1223) in order to avoid Ly-alpha exposure and obtain the best possible sensitivity. After guide star aquisition and target peak up, we will have about 2100 sec of total exposure time available for each target to be 15310( 6) - 24-Jul-2018 18:40:58 - [ 2] split between the FPOS settings . We expect very high quality spectra of ~20 available H2 lines at high S/N that will allow us to reach very faint sensitivities to molecular gas. If there is residual molecular disk gas in the inner few AU around any of our target stars, we should easily detect the H2 emission lines. The recorded bandpass also covers the strongest bands of the recently discovered FUV fluorescent emissions from CO. This Upper Sco gas disk Survey will also determine the relative abundances of CO and H2 in any detected disks. HST+COS is the most sensitive instrument for detecting small amounts of disk gas in the inner few AU, and high resolution, high S/N spectra are the key to detecting this gas in emission. This is a survey in order to find what fraction of these young stars display H2 emission. Without knowing the frequency of residual gas disks in Upper Sco it is hard to predict for certain what fraction of our targets will display the emision we are looking for. However, if we assume that 20% of our sample will show H2 emission to match the statistics of the Kepler planets, then we would expect to detect this emission in 6 of our 30 stars. The amount of our time request is driven entirely by statistics and the goal to obtain meaningful results. If we find 6 of 30 stars with H2 emission, we would measure a residual disk fraction of 20%. We would also find that the lower bound for this fraction (at the 95% confidence limit) is 9.5%, while the upper bound at the 95% confidence limit is 37.3%. With such small number statistics, the resulting uncertainties are relatively large. If our hypothesis is correct, there would be only a 0.13% chance of failing to detect H2 emission in any of our targets and there is a 1.5% chance of detecting only 1 star. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 15310( 6) - 24-Jul-2018 18:40:58 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 V-V1154-SCO STAR, CIRCUMSTELLAR RA=16H02M10.4334S +/- 0.06", J2000 V = 9.3 +/- 0.1 MATTER, K V-IV, DEC=-22D41'28.79" +/- 0.06" PRE-MAIN SEQUENCE STAR, T TAURI STAR Reference Frame: ICRS Extended: NO Comments: This object was generated by the targetselector and retrieved from the SIMBAD database. Also ran ETC (1013563) with Av = 0.0 to verify no warnings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sub Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Target | Exp |Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Cent.|Primary |Secondary |Iteration |CR-SPLIT |Orbit |Duration Name | Num |Config | Mode | or FOV |Element |Wave.|Pattern Pos |Pattern Pos |Num |Num |Number | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2MASS-J15580815-240 1 COS/NUV ACQ/IMA PSA MIRRORB none none none none 1 N/A 5529 GE 2MASS-J15580815-240 2 COS/FUV TIME-TA PSA G130M 1222 none none none none 1 N/A 5529 G 2MASS-J15580815-240 3 COS/FUV TIME-TA PSA G130M 1222 none none none none 1 N/A 5529 G 15310( 6) - 24-Jul-2018 18:40:58 - [ 72] Summary Form for Proposal 15310 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apertures PSA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Configurations COS/FUV, COS/NUV ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Opmodes ACQ/IMAGE, ACQ/PEAKD, ACQ/PEAKXD, TIME-TAG ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Optional Parameters BUFFER-TIME=1000, BUFFER-TIME=1003, BUFFER-TIME=1014, BUFFER-TIME=1015, BUFFER-TIME=1024, BUFFER-TIME=1029, BUFFER-TIME=1045, BUFFER-TIME=1047, BUFFER-TIME=1048, BUFFER-TIME=1054, BUFFER-TIME=1059, BUFFER-TIME=1069, BUFFER-TIME=1070, BUFFER-TIME=1074, BUFFER-TIME=1089, BUFFER-TIME=1090, BUFFER-TIME=1093, BUFFER-TIME=1105, BUFFER-TIME=860, BUFFER-TIME=894, BUFFER-TIME=910, BUFFER-TIME=914, BUFFER-TIME=921, BUFFER-TIME=929, BUFFER-TIME=930, BUFFER-TIME=959, BUFFER-TIME=984, CENTER=FLUX-WT-FLR, FLASH=YES, FP-POS=1, FP-POS=2, NUM-POS=5, SEGMENT=BOTH, STEP-SIZE=0.9, STRIPE=DEF ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Requirements GS ACQ SCENARIO ONEB1B ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Spectral Elements G130M, G230L, MIRRORA, MIRRORB ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Target Names 2MASS-J15570234-1950419, 2MASS-J15580815-2405529, 2MASS-J15584772-1757595, 2MASS-J16004277-2127380, 2MASS-J16010801-2113184, 2MASS-J16023910-2542078, 2MASS-J16025123-2401574, 2MASS-J16025243-2402226, 2MASS-J16025396-2022480, 2MASS-J16061254-2036472, 2MASS-J16081474-1908327, 2MASS-J16085673-2033460, 2MASS-J16130271-2257446, 2MASS-J16132929-2311075, 2MASS-J16193396-2228294, 2MASS-J16230783-2300596, BD-18-4244, BD-21-4301, CD-22-11315, CD-25-11113, GSC-06208-00834, NAME-V-V1001-SCO-A, PGZ2001-J161031.9-191305, PZ99-J161019.1-250230, V-V1152-SCO, V-V1154-SCO, V-V1156-SCO, V-V1157-SCO, V-V2505-OPH, WA-OPH-1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
