Recent observations of the content of quasar host halos have found unusually high covering fractions of cool gas observed in absorption in background quasar spectra. The cool halo gas is strongly correlated with quasar luminosity and exceeds what is observed around non-AGN galaxies by factor of two. Together, these observations provide compelling evidence for a connection between AGN activity and halo gas on 20-200 kpc scales. The high covering fraction and correlation with quasar luminosity may be the result of debris from the galaxy mergers thought to trigger luminous quasars or the halo gas of satellites in gas-rich groups amenable to quasar feeding. If this is the case, then the cool gas observed in absorption will be correlated with signatures of recent galaxy interactions in the quasar host or satellites close to the background sightline. Here, we propose a snapshot imaging survey of z<1 quasars with available constraints on halo gas content to examine a possible correlation between cool halo gas and galaxy interaction signatures. Galaxy morphologies and faint tidal features at z~1 can only be observed with the high resolution imaging capabilities of HST due to the substantial flux in extended wings of AO point-spread functions. The images will be of significant archival value for studying the galaxy environments of quasars and for constraining gas flow models with multi-sightline halo gas studies of galaxies at lower redshift than the foreground & background quasars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will conduct an HST snapshot imaging survey for quasars of z<~1 that have transverse MgII absorption constraints from background quasar spectra in order to search for a possible relationship between the absorption properties and signatures of galaxy interactions in the quasar host and neighboring galaxies. To provide the most accurate comparison to local morphology studies and obtain optimal signal-to-noise for these intermediate-redshift targets, we will observe them with the F814W filter on the ACS+WFC which samples the rest-frame 16016( 3) - 10-Oct-2019 16:42:15 - [ 2] optical. The observations will be carried out with a standard two-point dither mode to fill in the WFC chip gap and enable cosmic-ray rejection over the vast majority field. We verify the ability to detect low-surface brightness features indicative of galaxy interactions observed in this mode by simulating an image from two exposures totaling 1.2 ks with the ACS+WFC in F814W of interacting galaxies at z=0.8 from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (Figure 5 of the Phase I proposal). We will place the foreground quasar at the WFC1 aperture in order to ensure full integration time and cosmic ray removal near the foreground and background quasars. A primary concern with a snapshot proposal with a control group is ensuring balance between quasars with MgII absorption and the non-absorbing control sample given the stochastic yield of a snapshot. To guarantee a balance between the sample size of the observed absorbing and control group quasars, we will actively manage and modify the target list as the survey is being executed.
