Ayres University of Colorado at Boulder Y ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract Spacecraft heating causes parts of Chandra X-ray Observatory's sky -- especially the Ecliptic poles (EP) -- to be undesirable for scheduling. Normally, the EPs are celestial sweet spots. Always 90 degrees from the Sun, they are good for observations by satellites and from the ground, and receive high exposurse by scanning missions like TESS and eROSITA. HST's recent "Ecliptic poles Stellar Survey" (EclipSS) identified 10 FUV-extreme stars among 49 late-type dwarfs of the original target sample. Objective is to obtain short exposures of these objects with Chandra's HRC-I camera (best soft response of the available sensors), to link coronal X-rays to the existing FUV material. Jointly, HST/COS will cover key parts of the spectrum (especially C IV 155 nm) reluctantly sacrificed in the original fast survey (single orbit per target). While the EP target attitudes are "bad" (for Chandra heating), the exploration science is great, and well worth the extra scheduling effort. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ The observing scenario is similar for the ten targets, requiring a single COS orbit each. Following the Guide Star acquisition, an NUV imaging ACQ is carried out, using the BOA and either Mirror A or B depending on the target brightness. The target coordinates, from Gaia DR2, are very accurate. The NUV ACQ is followed by exposures with G160M-1533 (134 nm - 171 nm) at the 4 standard FP-POS steps, with equal-length sub-exposures, about 550 s for the typical target. The original program had included additional observations with COS NUV, to capture the important chromospheric MgII 280 nm doublet, but discussions with the STScI staff indicated that the sensitivity of the G285M mode, which has been declining rapidly in recent years, would be unsatisfactory for the purpose, so the NUV exposures were dropped (STIS NUV could not be substituted, because COS and STIS cannot be used in the same visit, and the program has allocated only a single orbit per target.) SAFETY ISSUES. All the targets have been observed previously in the FUV by COS, with no safety issues, even considering the bright H I 121 nm Lyman-alpha line, which is not covered in the present program. ETC runs were based on the StarCAT UV spectrum of the active mid-G dwarf Kappa Ceti, scaled to the average visual magnitude of the 10 targets, V= 7.8+/-0.6 mag. Kap Cet has FUV f/f_BOL emission-line ratios typical of the (high) activity levels of the Bad Attitude targets. S/N at the important emission 16376( 5) - 16-Oct-2020 19:29:45 - [ 2] lines (e.g., FUV Si IV 139 nm) is predicted to exceed 10 per resel in a single (of the 4) FP splits.
