The consequences of these interactions for subsequent evolutionary stages and for the endpoints of stellar evolution are still not well understood, particularly for the red supergiant (RSG) phase: the final evolutionary stage before supernova for the majority of massive stars. To improve our understanding of RSG binary systems we propose to characterise hot companions around RSGs in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using HST ultra-violet STIS spectroscopy. Using a combination of newly acquired photometric and archival spectroscopic observations, we have selected a sample of 28 of the highest probability RSG binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud. From stellar evolutionary models and the small number of confirmed RSG binaries in the Galaxy, we expect the majority of hot companions to be either main-sequence B-type stars or binary interaction products (e.g. from the merger of higher-order multiple components). These observations allow us to characterise SMC RSG binary systems by accurately determining masses of the hot companions to break degeneracies in orbital solutions. The results of this proposal represent a significant advancement in the characterisation of hot companions to RSGs, in orbital configurations and mass ranges that will ultimately result in double compact object binary systems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We have a total of 28 allocated SNAP targets in the SMC. Each SNAP target will be observed with the STIS/NUV CCD G230LB mode. Target acquisition will focus on the RSG star using the F28X50LP filter. Our SNAP targets range in UVIT FUV magnitude from 13.75 to 19.5 [AB magnitudes]. The faintest targets require around 53 minutes to deliver a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 5 per resolution element. The minimum SNR we have estimated for the targets is 7.1 for #11 PMMR 122. We estimate that at 16776( 4) - 30-Aug-2021 15:52:40 - [ 2] this signal-to-noise ratio, for a main-sequence B-type star, we can assign a spectral type and estimate stellar parameters. We have adjusted final exposure times for each target accordingly and for the brightest targets less than 20 minutes will be required to reach this level. All targets use the G230LB mode, selected specifically to focus on the hot components. At longer wavelengths (e.g. G430L) the RSG would dominate at the longest wavelengths and saturate the observations. To mitigate charge transfer efficiency effects we have selected the 52x0.2E1 aperture for all targets. For each fixed target we have included the description [B0-B2 V-IV, B3-B5 V-IV, B6-B9.5 V-IV, K III-I]. This is to highlight two points: 1. This is an exploratory proposal and therefore we do not know the spectral type of the B-type companion to great precision 2.
