To make good use of otherwise unused HST time and resources, we propose to carry out a high angular resolution survey of early type B stars to better constrain and establish the incidence of multiplicity among these astrophysically important (e.g., progenitors of Cepheids, red supergiants, type II SNe) but comparatively neglected stars. This survey is composed of single epoch observations and thus is well suited for making optimal use of the whatever HST time is available. We propose a modest size target list (~30 targets, which can be expanded upon) prioritized according the star's astrophysical significance. FGS2 is an ideal instrument for these observations as it can resolve binary systems with component separations down to ~12 mas and magnitude differences of ~2, and larger magnitude difference for larger separations, well beyond the capability of Gaia, e.g. For the safety of HST, we propose to use FGS2r2 as this FGS already has the F583W filter element in place for guiding, which also provides HST's best angular resolution. Therefore, no filter wheel needs to be commanded away from its current position, eliminating any risk to the observatory. Moreover, our proposed observations will make use of FGS1 and FGS3 for guiding, and this will keep active their star selector servos (the guide stars will be widely distributed across those two guiders). This will relieve the OTA engineers of the task to manually force guide star acquisitions to accomplish the same goal, but with the important distinction that valuable science will result from these observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to use FGS2 with the F583W filter to observe astrophysically interesting B and Be stars in TRANS mode to search for resolved binary systems.
