Our strategy is a dual approach to unveil the complex star formation histories of these galaxies which have archival large-aperture FUSE and longer-wavelength COS spectroscopy. Extending the existing COS coverage down to 950 A yields (i) panchromatic COS spectroscopy with matching apertures, and (ii) same-wavelength spectroscopy with large (FUSE) and small (COS) apertures. The galaxies were selected to cover a representative range of morphology, luminosity, chemical composition and distance. The new data will open a new spectroscopic window that has not been explored in detail with HST. Comparison with FUSE spectra will allow a study of the scales of star formation over areas differing by factors of 150. The 950 - 1150 A wavelength region contains stellar and interstellar spectral lines complementing and expanding the diagnostics at longer wavelengths. In particular, the strong O VI 1035 doublet with an ionization potential of 114 eV probes the highest energies powered by stellar winds. We will test and calibrate this line as a tracer of massive stars. In combination with available HST and other data we will investigate the star-formation history, the kinematics of the interstellar medium, and the effects of dust attenuation, including the reddening law down to near the Lyman break. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will use COS with the G130M (1096) grating to collect R = 10, 000 spectra of the nine target galaxies in the wavelength range ~950 - 1230 A. The 17 A gap at 1090 A does not affect any of the strategic lines to be observed, in particular the O VI 1035 doublet, which is redshifted by less than 20 A in all galaxies. The 1096 setting has recently been fully calibrated, and its internal accuracy is comparable to those of other wavelength settings. 17106( 9) - 20-Dec-2024 14:08:27 - [ 2] The acquisition images of previous observations of the targets with COS at longer wavelengths give constraints on the expected morphologies inside the PSA. The galaxies are typically characterized by a central cluster and surrounded by several fainter star-formation regions. For the purpose of the target acquisition, they are essentially point sources, and the COS resolution will only mildly be degraded. We will take advantage of the existing archival COS data and adopt an identical acquisition strategy, including the previously used target coordinates. The targets will be acquired with either MIRROR-A or MIRROR-B, depending on brightness. No target exceeds the brightness limit for MIRROR-B. We will use ACQ/IMAGE in all cases Prior FUSE and COS fluxes are readily available and permit a risk-free prediction of the orbit requirement. Inspection of the FUSE spectra indicates that Milky Way foreground absorption lines of H2 will not be an issue. The differences in the FUSE and COS fluxes in columns 2 and 3 are exclusively due to the different aperture sizes. The galaxy spectra are essentially flat between 1050 and 1150 A. Therefore we adopt the observed COS 1150 A fluxes as the expected flux in the COS aperture at 1050 A. NGC 5236 and NGC 5253 have archival COS data for multiple clusters in these galaxies. We will target the brightest cluster in each galaxy, and the fluxes refer to this cluster. We require a minimum S/N of 5 at ~1040 A, the wavelength of O VI, which is a strong line. This wavelength is recorded on COS Segment B. The COS sensitivity rises dramatically longward of 1100 A, where Segment A is used. With Segment A, the expected S/N will be about 40, as required for the much fainter wind and photospheric lines. The S/N on both segments will allow us to analyze the strong stellar-wind profiles as well as the weak photospheric lines and compare them with population synthesis models, measure the outflow properties of the ISM from interstellar absorption lines, and determine the dust properties from the continuum shape. The corresponding exposure times are listed in column 4 of Table 2. They were obtained using the COS ETC with the Identifiers in column 5. In column 6 of this table we list the required orbits. This includes allowance for overheads and assumes the orbit lengths as reported by APT. IRAS 08339+6517 is located in the CVZ. We request CVZ observations for this galaxy, which reduces the non-CVZ request from 8 to 5 orbits.
