However, it is also clear that strong AGN in local dwarfs are rare. Dwarf galaxies in galaxy clusters are subject to ram pressure stripping (RPS) that can have an initial positive effect on star formation and AGN accretion, as suggested by studies of more massive galaxies. In this proposal, we select a sample of dwarf galaxies undergoing RPS in the Virgo cluster. New Chandra observations are proposed to search for X-ray AGN and X-ray binaries (including ULXs) in these dwarfs. Joint HST observations are also requested. This survey also complements previous Chandra surveys on massive Virgo galaxies with a similar depth. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe 11 dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster with two filters F475W and F814W to study their star formation in these galaxies, search for nuclear sources and features indicative of ram pressure stripping. F475W and F814W observations will be done in one orbit with ACS/WFC so each galaxy will be observed for one orbit. The ACS aperture is typically WFC (WFCENTER for the 8th target), except for the three smallest galaxies (WFC1-FIX used). The ACS data in two high-throughput filters allow detections of faint features (e.g., individual star cluster associations, dust) and a detailed color map of these galaxies.
