These observations are revolutionizing our view of the early universe, but the community is under-prepared to interpret them because models of massive stars remain entirely theoretical and uncertain at the relevant metallicities (<20% Z_sun). FUV spectra from HST suggest that the winds and ionizing fluxes of O stars change substantially at low metallicity, but our understanding of this complex astrophysics is fundamentally limited by glaring gaps in the observational coverage of O-star parameter space. We propose to assemble a comprehensive FUV spectral library of O stars in nearby galaxies at 5-10% Z_sun to complement the ULLYSES dataset at 20-50% Z_sun. New COS G130M and/or G140L spectra of 12 stars will complete the wavelength coverage and moderate resolution required to determine their stellar and wind properties. The new spectra efficiently build on those already in MAST to sample the full range of O-star temperatures and luminosities. We will analyze the combined new and archival COS spectra of 29 O stars to (1) empirically calibrate mass-loss models below 20% Z_sun for the first time; and (2) produce data-driven ionizing spectral templates suitable to determine the contribution of metal-poor galaxies to cosmic reionization. We will release a science-ready, legacy dataset of FUV spectra and reduced ancillary observations as HLSPs for the community to enable new investigations of stellar and ISM physics at low metallicity. This program can only be completed with COS and will form the definitive FUV spectral atlas at very low metallicity for decades to come. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe 12 O-type stars in nearby, metal-poor dwarf galaxies with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. We will use the G130M and/or G140L gratings to 17491( 11) - 08-Dec-2025 17:08:04 - [ 2] achieve the moderate resolution and wavelength coverage of important stellar wind and photospheric features needed to constrain the mass-loss rates, metal abundances, and output of ionizing photons. We obtained initial coordinates by locating the target stars in HST imaging with updated WCS information aligned to Gaia DR2. We then identified the target stars in the Gaia catalog and adopted the coordinates reported by Gaia for these observations. Gaia reports astrometric uncertainties less than 1 mas, but we conservatively estimate uncertainties of 0.05 arcsec. We calculate exposure times using the NUV F275W magnitudes of all target stars. We estimate the interstellar reddening assuming intrinsically blue colors typical of these spectral types and use the Bruzual spectral template with the most similar spectral type to each target star in the COS ETC. We have tested the impact of adopting models with different, but still similar, spectral types in the COS ETC and confirm that the estimated exposure times will achieve SNR ~ 10 or higher per resolution element near key photosphere and wind features. In most cases, we adopt BUFFER-TIMES of 2/3 times the values reported by the COS ETC. The exceptions are two stars with early spectral types not represented in the Bruzual templates available in the COS ETC (leaving their count rates more uncertain; IC1613-GHV-64066, NGC3109-EBU-48), as well as one with an unusually high buffer fill time compared to other, similar targets (NGC3109-1); in these cases, we conservatively adopt BUFFER-TIME = 1/2 times the ETC value to prevent possible data loss. We use the ACQ/IMAGE mode with the PSA and Mirror A for target acquisition. All our observations satisfy the BOT safety standards. We organize the observations into visits of at most 3 orbits, as strongly encouraged for Cycle 31 observations. For all spectroscopic observations, we use TIME-TAG mode with FLASH=YES. We use the G130M grating with the 1291 central wavelength to cover the N V 1240, O V 1371, and Si IV 1400 stellar wind profiles for stars that have not been previously observed with this grating. The G130M configuration only uses FP-POS=3, 4 to satisfy the COS2025 restrictions. We also use the G140L grating with the 800 central wavelength for stars that do not have existing G140L or G160M observations redward of ~1400 Angstroms to cover the forest of Fe IV transitions and the key C IV 1550 stellar wind profile. We use all available FP-POS=1, 2, 3, 4 for the G140L observations following the COS handbook, except for one single-orbit observation (of IC1613-GHV-64066) where we use only FP-POS=1, 4 to minimize the impact of overheads on the S/N of the observation. In the event of reduced-gyro operations, the main impact on this program will be to reduce the number of windows available to schedule observations. However, none of the visits have ORIENT or timing constraints, so the full program should still be schedulable without issues even in reduced-gyro mode. We re-ran the visit planner with Gyro Mode=1G and verified that plenty of observing windows remain for all visits. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 17491( 11) -
