This is most evident in the population of hot subdwarf stars: mostly helium-core stars that lack any hydrogen envelope. They occupy the HRD region between the main sequence and white dwarfs, covering a vast temperature (10kK to 100kK) and luminosity range (1 to 10^4 times solar). Besides canonical post-AGB evolution, they are formed by close binary evolution with mass transfer, common envelope episodes, and mergers. Their peculiar chemical compositions, magnetism, and stellar winds allow us to test nucleosynthesis and atomic diffusion calculations. Several subdwarf binaries have orbital periods <1h and some are among the best candidates for the progenitors of supernovae Ia and qualify as calibration sources for gravitational wave detectors like LISA. Links between the subclasses of hot subdwarfs can only be understood by detailed far-UV abundance studies, because most metals become accessible only through their 17697( 7) - 10-Sep-2025 16:32:52 - [ 2] UV lines. We have designed a sample of prototypical hot subdwarfs to cover all types and phenomena with FUV spectroscopy with STIS/COS. They will be used to: (1) Identify stars formed by merger channels, as well as stable and unstable Roche lobe overflow evolution, and thus constrain binary evolution in general. (2) Obtain observational constraints to test theoretical nucleosynthesis, atomic diffusion, stellar wind, and evolutionary model calculations. (3) Construct a legacy sample of high-quality spectra covering this uncharted territory in stellar evolution, which provides templates for stellar population studies and atomic physics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Bright hot subdwarf stars (sdO/sdB) are observed with STIS/E140M. Most of these stars can achieve SNR > 30 in a single orbit. For some stars, up to three orbits are necessary to achive this SNR. Fainter stars are observed with COS/G130M-1291. Here SNR > 50 is usually achieved in a single orbit, except the especially important DY Cen (3 orbits). Because the position of these stars is well known from Gaia DR3 and the COS aperature is large, we do not require a specific target acquisition for stars observed with COS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 17697( 7) - (2022A&A...663A..62). They claim that the star has a bright MS B-type companion (11500K) that outshines the target, a BLAP-type sdB (29000K), in the optical. BLAPs are blue large amplitude pulsators. The variation in the optical is only 3.2% (or 0.04mag), due to the contribution of the MS-B type. In this scenario, the target would be expected to be variable at roughly 40% in the far-UV. However, our more recent analysis seems to suggest that a single bright component suffices to model HD133729. This means that the far-UV variablility would be much smaller. In any case, the far-UV flux level is constrained by TD1 observations: in the Galex-FUV band about 10.13mag. The target is save for STIS. The companion is a F-type MS star and will not contribute to the FUV flux. In Fig. 1 of Heber et al., both stars are of similar brightness; the target is the slightly fainter one. The same will be the case for the acquisition image.
