In Cycles 1-3, JWST programs are obtaining >300 hours of imaging and spectroscopy over Abell 2744, mapping the entire high magnification area, constituting the mission's deepest, and crucially, fully public extragalactic dataset. With JWST imaging reaching 29-30AB in 20 filters at 1-5 micron (not counting the extra lensing boost), ultradeep JWST NIRISS+NIRSpec+WFSS spectroscopy, plus deep ALMA dust continuum, MUSE datacubes, and Chandra X-ray observations, Abell 2744 is a peerless legacy field. This treasure trove of data presents an unprecedented opportunity to answer high-profile reionization questions only addressable with HST UV imaging. Here, we propose an immediately-public HST program to supplement currently-inadequate HST coverage by providing ultra-deep WFC3/UVIS (F336W) imaging over a 4x wider area, matching the full coverage of the JWST spectroscopy. The proposed F336W data enables measurements of Lyman continuum and ionizing photon escape fractions in z=3-4 sources (analogs to epoch of reionization galaxies) to unambiguously determine the role of galaxies in reionization. This data will also improve constraints on the UV luminosity function, star formation in quiescent galaxies, the metallicity of globular clusters within A2744, and the origin of the UV upturn in foreground cluster galaxies. These observations must be taken now to leverage the unique and time-limited UV capabilities of HST and maximize the potential of a remarkable suite of observations from HST, JWST, ALMA, and Chandra. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ [Updated for Phase II] The roll angle constraints ensure that the WFC3/UVIS images map the largest possible coverage of the JWST data, including the full mu > 2 region, in 4 pointings. There are two windows that have schedulability and would be sufficient (ideally 350-360, else 260-270). Small adjustments to the 4 pointing positions may be necessary depending on the PA scheduled. We include both windows to allow maximum flexibility in scheduling. There is a trade-off with UV imaging between long exposures to mitigate against the necessary penalty with increased backgrounds due to the post-flash (i.e., minimize read noise) and the accumulation of cosmic rays. Nominally we would use a single long exposure per orbit, however we are worried that the single gyro mode might complicate the astrometry from orbit to orbit. We therefore opt to group our observations into 3-orbit visits with 2 exposures per orbit, using 17730( 7) - 06-May-2025 12:54:22 - [ 3] the WFC3-UVIS-DITHER-LINE-3PT pattern. Each of the 6 visits to a pointing are then shifted in the x- and y-direction by 0.5 arcsec using POS TARG within each dual exposure set to ensure we cover the chip gap and mitigate striping effects in the data. Together with the position offsets and the dither pattern, we should fully sample the PSF, cover the UVIS chip gap, and correct for the hot pixels and background defect patterns. However, given each orbit requires a guide star acquisition, our total exposure times are reduced by ~10%. Post-flash will be used (FLASH = 13 e-/pix) to optimize charge transfer efficiency in the detector.
