This proposal will use the unique powers of HST to directly address several complex, outstanding questions about AGN feedback. With 70 orbits of STIS G140L, and a long slit, we will produce a comprehensive pseudo-Integral Field Unit (IFU) map of NGC 1068, the prototypical Type 2 Seyfert galaxy. Our observational objectives are to (1) uniformly map key emission lines for detailed diagnostics of highly ionized and excited gas that are only visible in the far-UV, (2) simultaneously map the radiation field from the AGN and the young stellar populations, source by source, 17749( 7) - 29-Sep-2025 17:36:37 - [ 2] and (3) build a multi-dimensional ionization/kinematic map over 0.5 x 1 kpc at 10 pc resolution. This map will resolve the dynamic interplay between radiation and kinematic feedback from AGN and star formation and enable several interrelated scientific outcomes. We will (1) quantify the budget of kinetic energy and radiation flowing into the interstellar medium, (2) validate and calibrate *resolved* emission-line diagnostics that are used to trace AGN vs. star formation in unresolved galaxies seen by JWST, (3) provide a ground truth for models and simulations of AGN feedback at higher spatial resolution than state-of-the-art simulations, and (4) pioneer far-UV IFU-like mapping of nearby galaxies, a key science instrument capability expected for the future Habitable Worlds Observatory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Observational Strategy: We have chosen the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) with the G140L grating for our analysis of NGC 1068. This configuration remains optimal compared to the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) medium spectral-resolution gratings, offering extensive wavelength coverage (1150-1730A) at high spatial resolution (0.2" x 0.2" spatial bins). This is essential for our detailed study of the nucleus and surrounding regions. Utilizing the STIS G140L grating provides significant advantages: Gapless Spatial Coverage: Using slits rather than COS pointings enables continuous spatial coverage across our field of interest. This approach, successfully demonstrated in previous STIS observations, is critical for creating an uninterrupted map of the UV emission features around the AGN. Spatial Resolution Consistency: The spatial resolution provided by STIS G140L is directly comparable to optical, high spatial-resolution spectroscopic observations, which is vital for conducting parallel kinematic and structural analyses across different wavelengths, allowing accurate correlation of features and dynamics between the UV and optical regimes. Updated Observing Strategy: Due to Hubble entering Reduced Gyro Mode (RGM), the originally proposed position angle (PA) now provides less than ten days of observing time. Therefore, we will observe NGC 1068 at a PA of 220 degrees (Orient = 265 degrees), offering a 60-day observing window in 2025. Slit Configuration: AGN Region: 18 slits, each 0.2" wide. Star-Forming Region: 14 slits, each 0.2" wide. Connecting Field: 3 slits, each 2.0" wide, to create a near-continuous field of view across the region. Initial Targeting: Observations will commence by targeting a nearby G0V star, BD-00-413, for Target Acquisition and then offsetting to each slit position, specified as an 17749( 7) - 29-Sep-2025 17:36:37 - [ 3] offset from the position of the slit in Visit 1. Field Coverage: Our ~13''-wide field of view encompasses critical regions identified in UV imaging, ensuring the capture of the dynamic AGN environment and prominent star-forming regions within the starburst ring (~11 arcseconds radius). This setup allows us to focus on the central dynamic regions, with extended optical AGN-ionized gas largely in rotation to the northeast of the proposed field. Spectral Setup: Slit Width: 0.2" (~10pc) across bright regions to prevent line smearing in the dispersion direction. 2.0" slits across faint regions are employed to connect finely-sampled regions and attempt to detect any faint tracers not observed in imaging. Grating Utilization: Although the G140L grating provides 25 arcseconds of coverage in the cross-dispersion direction, we will frame our observations inside a 20-arcsecond long field at the bottom of the detector (NE side of the field) to avoid effects from the repeller wire shadow on the detector. Binning: Spectra will be binned by 8 pixels in the cross-dispersion direction (along the slit) to create 0.2" x 0.2" spaxels in the finely sampled regions, matching optical VLT/MUSE observations. Exposure Time Calculations: Our calculations, based on archival G140L data, show that two orbits per pointing will yield a continuum SNR of ~5 at 1550 Angstroms assuming a continuum of 1.5e-14 flam/arcsecond^2. This ensures we can measure AGN and star-forming spectral signatures on a per spaxel basis across several regions in the field. Data Products: We will utilize two-dimensional spectral data products (x2d files) to maintain spatial information along the slit. These products, calibrated for sensitivity variations and geometric distortions, are ready for scientific analysis.
