This recycling is found to manifest as disk-like accreting structures in the plane of some galaxies, and bi-conical outflows perpendicular to the galaxy disk. In absorption studies using background sources, this is seen as an increase in absorber incidence near to the major and minor axes of galaxies. Measuring galaxy orientations requires high resolution imaging only available from space, whilst associating gas and galaxies requires deep, high resolution galaxy and quasar spectra. Although many quasars have been observed with HST to-date, few have the imaging and galaxy spectroscopy required to measure CGM properties as a function of galaxy orientation. We propose a coordinated HST/JWST GO+archival program to ensure this high-resolution imaging covers 51 fields with existing QSO spectra and MUSE coverage. This data will allow HI absorption and galaxy redshifts to be found at z<1.5 for 37 fields (of which 20 currently lack HST imaging), and at redshifts 3-4 for 14 fields (which will require JWST imaging). We will measure how CGM properties vary with azimuthal angle, how these variations depend on galaxy properties, and how they evolve with redshift. This will provide the first high-z sample and the largest low-z sample compiled to-date, allowing us to measure how the presence of accreting and outflowing structures in the CGM varies with galaxy properties, morphologies, and redshifts, 17815( 14) - 05-Nov-2025 16:44:58 - [ 2] and thereby discriminate between models of stellar feedback and gas recycling. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ For the HST portion of this HST/JWST/archival program, we use ACS in order to observe galaxies in the fields surrounding 20 bright quasars between z~0.5 and z~1.5 with existing COS/FOS/STIS spectra and galaxy spectra from MUSE. Many of these fields also feature shallower spectroscopy over a much wider field than covered by MUSE. The new high-resolution imaging is required to confidently measure galaxy orientations and morphologies, which cannot be done accurately from the ground. This will allow us to study the circumgalactic and intergalactic medium around these galaxies as a function of stellar mass, morphology, orientation and other galaxy properties. We use the F814W filter in order to cover the stellar continuum across the redshift range up to z=1.5, avoiding regions at < 3000 Angstrom that are dominated by young stars. This also provides consistency with similar archival observations around other quasars, which are utilized in this program. We aim to reach S/N ~12 for galaxies at mag ~ 26 (close to the faintest galaxies for which the MUSE data of these fields allow spectroscopic redshifts), in order to measure galaxy orientations and morphologies. This is achieved in ~1700s of exposure time per field, easily scheduled inside a single orbit. We take 4 exposures in each field, each of ~500s (with small variations due to different orbital visibility for each target) to allow easy cosmic ray removal. We use a line dither to cover the chip gap with 3 exposures and mitigate the impact of bad pixels. Although this large dither in combination with the geometric distortion of ACS leads to poor sub-pixel sampling, it allows us to center the quasar near the center of the ACS field (we use the 'WFC' aperture position). This ensures that we are able to measure galaxy orientations at large impact parameters in all directions around the quasar. As the ACS field is much larger than that of MUSE, there is no need for any constraints on telescope position angle, and hence no significant impact on this program due to reduced gyro operations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 17815( 14) -
