With the advent of JWST, CLs and rest-frame UV broad emission lines (BELs) are increasingly used to identify AGNs at high-z, where standard optical diagnostics are ambiguous. However, interpreting these high-ionization lines is limited by the lack of a well-calibrated connection between the observed lines and the underlying ionizing continuum. Several UV BELs have ionization potentials similar to CLs, while originating closer to the central engine and providing a direct probe of the incident ionizing continua. Rest-frame UV spectroscopy therefore offers a powerful way to constrain the physical conditions and ionizing continua that produce CL emission. We propose HST/COS UV spectroscopy of 18 local (z<0.15), unobscured (Type 1) AGNs with optical and/or NIR CL detections, combined with 14 archival CL-AGNs with HST UV spectra. Using uniform spectral measurements and photoionization modeling, we will test whether the UV BELs and CLs can be explained by a common ionizing continuum. This sample will determine whether CL-AGNs exhibit distinct UV properties relative to AGNs without CLs and quantify how CL strength depends on ionizing continuum and gas conditions. This study will establish the first local UV benchmark for CL-confirmed Type 1 AGNs, providing the essential calibration needed to interpret high-ionization emission lines in the growing population of JWST AGN candidates at high-z. More broadly, it will deliver a legacy dataset linking CL-based AGN identification to black hole accretion and ionization physics across cosmic time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain COS/FUV spectroscopy for 18 Type 1 coronal-line AGNs using the G140L grating at the 1280 central wavelength setting. The standard COS point-source acquisition procedures are used with COS/NUV ACQ/IMAGE and PSA+MirrorB and BOA+MirrorA depending on the brightness of the target to meet the safety limits. The science observations will use COS/FUV in TIME-TAG spectroscopic mode with G140L/1280. Exposures would be split using four FP-POS positions to improve fixed-pattern-noise rejection and detector sampling.
