Constraining how much of this material reaches the accretion flows onto the star is key to tracing the delivery of the building blocks of planets into the inner disk, the prime exoplanet region. Recent studies have shown that the magnetospheric accretion flows of young solar analogs (T Tauri stars, TTS) are depleted in the rocky element Ca, and this might be the result of incorporating solid material into planetary bodies or trapping in pressure bumps produced by planets in inner disk regions. We propose to determine if another key rocky element, Mg, is similarly depleted. We propose to observe 25 protoplanetary discs with STIS-E230M/COS-G230L spanning the disk dissipation timescale, to resolve the Mg II 2800 emission lines of TTS. Our proposed work will be the first systematic analysis of Mg abundances in the accreting material of 2-10 Myr TTS, providing a direct link between the innermost DISK gas and the disk dust's silicate composition (observed with JWST). These observations will help us characterize the rocky reservoir available for planets, constrain the effects of sublimation temperature sequence in rocky elements as well as inform on the available pebble flux along the disk lifetime, necessary to constrain disk evolution and planet formation models. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ The Mg II 2800 doublet is only accessible with HST. To achieve our scientific goals and measure Mg abundances, we propose to observe our sample using the STIS/E230M grating for our brightest targets, and COS/G230L for our faintests, allowing us to always resolve the doublet with a minimum of S/N ~15 at the peak and S/N ~5 and in the wings (~300 km/s). Because our estimates rely on emission lines formed in accretion flows, we must simultaneously characterize accretion properties to avoid uncertainty from accretion variability. STIS offers broader simultaneous NUV coverage than COS and is more efficient for continuum 18350( 2) - 18-Aug-2026 14:34:12 - [ 2] observations despite its lower throughput. We will observe all targets with the STIS/G230L and STIS/G430L gratings, which provide the NUV-optical continuum needed to derive mass accretion rates by modeling the excess flux over the photosphere. Because our science goal focuses on the Mg II 2800AA doublet, our time exposure calculations are optimized using the continuum flux at 2800AA(F2800). For targets without archival STIS/G230L observations to input into the ETC, we used existing STIS/G230L observations of TTS to calibrate the flux to the mass accretion rate, and then used this relation to estimate F2800 for our sources. Our targets have accretion rates measured independently from either the UV excess or the flux of Halpha line. Our observing strategy is: 1. For target acquisition, we used a flat spectrum scaled to F2800. For our faintest object, OB1a1630, we obtain S/N~20 in 0.9 for STIS ACQ mode and the F28x50 LP (STIS.ta.2364325), and S/N~20 in 6s for COS ACQ with MIRRORA (COS.ta.2364320). 2. For STIS/E230M grating observations we will use the 0.x0.2 slit. For our brightest target, the required S/N is achievable in a median time of ~922.23 sec exposure (e.g. XXCha, STIS.sp.2328244). 3. For our COS/G230L observations, we will use the channel centered at 2950AA. Even for our faintest target, OB1a1630, we obtain the desired S/N in one orbit (COS.sp.2329073). 4. For our G230L and G430L observations we will use the 52x0.2 slit for each target, these come at not extra cost for 67% of our sample.
