Astronomers do not yet know where or how local gas flows connect up and become collimated into large scale outflows. By targeting the disk-halo interface up to z ~ 1 kpc, this proposal probes a key region where this transition happens and local flows becomes global. We propose HST/STIS E140H echelle observations of 20 Milky Way inner-Galaxy OB stars located within the disk-halo interface spanning a range of Galactic latitudes b = +/-20 degrees, and inside the Galactic tangent points (l <~ +/-30 degrees). These observations will be combined with HST/STIS E140H archival spectra of 2 inner-Galaxy sight lines that meet the same regional criteria. The sample stars are chosen because they form pairs of sight lines which match very closely in longitude (< 0.68 degrees) and are at comparable distances, but fall at different latitudes. Thus, the pairs create a vertical slice in latitude extending from the disk through the disk-halo interface at a single longitude through 10 places in the inner-Galaxy, divided evenly between the inner-Galactic quadrants I and IV. High-resolution stellar absorption-line spectroscopy of these close pairs is required in order to precisely trace kinematic signatures of Local outflows from the disk, through the disk-halo interface, and into the lower circumgalactic medium. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe 20 Galactic OB stars with STIS/E140H. This description will be updated with appropriate details in the next iteration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 18375( 2) - 19-Aug-2026 13:32:49 - [ 2] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 HD-165582 STAR, B0-B2 III-I RA=18H08M7.5309S, J2000 V = 9.74 +/- 0.14 U = 8.58; B = 9.56; DEC=-34D34'32.36" IUE Flux = 5.00E-12 erg/cm^2/s/A at 1350A Reference Frame: ICRS Comments: This object was generated by the targetselector and retrieved from the SIMBAD database.
