Y ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract Simulations predict that Cosmic Web filaments harbor ~30-40% of all baryons at low redshift, primarily as warm-hot gas detectable through UV absorption. Such filaments are thought to have a cool-to-hot accretion region (10^4-10^6 K), a central cooler spine (~10^5 K), and a slow flow toward the nearest galaxy cluster. We propose to study the NE filament of the Coma Cluster - the best case for this investigation in the nearby universe. It has a rich set of ancillary data (SDSS galaxies, SZ maps) and constrained simulations. This program will characterize the width and structure of the filament, its gas properties, and any velocities associated with filament accretion and flow toward the cluster. Archival COS spectra demonstrate feasibility through Lya detections, but there are too few sight lines to explore the expected cool spine or to determine the filament width. We propose COS G130M observations of 11 AGN sightlines, combined with 6 archival sightlines in order to: (1) measure the gas-phase filament width (predicted 1-3 Mpc); (2) map the velocity field to test accretion onto the filament and its flow toward the cluster; and (3) constrain the warm baryon mass. These observations exploit HST's FUV spectroscopic capability and will provide the first spatially resolved UV absorption map of a Cosmic Web filament feeding a massive cluster, directly testing predictions from constrained simulations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Target Selection. We found our targets by combining the Veron-Cetty & Veron quasar catalog, the SDSS DR16 quasar catalog, and the Million Quasars Catalog (Flesch 2023), cross-matched with GALEX photometry. We selected AGN for which COS can achieve S/N~8 per resolution element in ~6 orbits, requiring FUV flux >6x10^15 erg/s/cm^2/A. Each candidate was visually inspected in GALEX FUV/NUV images and the DESI Legacy Imaging Survey (https://www.legacysurvey.org) to confirm it is a point source. The COS-G130M grating will be set to a central wavelength of 1291 A, using FP-POS=3 and 4. Guide star acquisition and grating setup takes ~700 seconds in the first orbit, ~300s in later ones, leaving ~1.800 and 2, 100 seconds of exposure time, respectively. Visits will be limited to three orbits, with multiple visits for some targets. They are not bright enough to pose a bright limit threat. Detection Feasibility. We search for warm photoionized and collisionally 18380( 2) - 11-Aug-2026 17:24:05 - [ 2] ionized gas at T~10^4.5-10^5.5 K, corresponding to Doppler parameters b~20-50 km/s. At logN(HI)=13.0-13.5, expected equivalent widths are 80-300 mA, producing line depths of 20-80% of the continuum. At S/N=8 in the continuum this comfortably reveals stronger lines and provides meaningful upper limits on weaker ones. For the hottest detectable gas (10^5.5 K, b=5 0km/s), lines with W~100 mA have depths ~30% and remain detectable. We note explicitly that gas at T>10^6 K produces Ly-alpha that is too broad and shallow for detection at this S/N; such gas is instead constrained by the SZ measurement. Justification of COS Settings. We use only G130M-1291, covering 1134-1274 and 1291-1441 A. Lifetime position limitations. With 11 moderate S/N exposures using G130M-1291, we remain well within the 200-target limit. Note that APT gives two warnings. First it says 'inefficient ordering of FP-POS settings. But if they are exchanged with FE-POS=4 before FP-POS=3 there are visibility overruns and the exposure time would be shorter Second, it says that exposures are longer than 900 seconds and this can lead to smearing due to drift.
