Observations of a handful of brightest cluster galaxies suggest that BH masses may exceed predictions from the M-sigma relation by up to an order of magnitude, indicating a possible transition in BH growth from velocity dispersion-regulated to merger-driven, stellar-mass-dominated assembly. However, this result is based on only six systems and lacks statistical significance. We propose HST/ACS/WFC imaging of a carefully selected sample of 20 ultra-massive early-type galaxies (stellar mass > 2.5e12 Msol) spanning diverse environments. Combined with existing JWST/NIRSpec and wide-field IFS data (VLT/MUSE or Magellan/ROSIE), these observations will enable the first unbiased dynamical measurements of BH masses at the extreme high-mass end. The requested HST data are essential to construct accurate stellar mass models across all spatial scales, resolving galaxy cores while tracing extended halos, and breaking degeneracies between BH mass and dark matter halo. This program will provide the first systematic calibration of the high-mass end of BH-galaxy scaling relations and deliver a decisive test of whether a fundamental transition in BH growth occurs in the most massive galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Each visit consists of one HST orbit targeting a single ETG in two ACS/WFC filters: F814W and F555W. The visit is structured to maximize science exposure time within the 50-minute orbital visibility window. VISIT STRUCTURE (per target): - Guide star acquisition: ~6 min - F814W: 2 x 270s (total 540s), CR-SPLIT=2, GAIN=2 - Filter change: ~0.5 min - F555W: 2 x 900s (total 1800s), CR-SPLIT=2, GAIN=2 - Total science + overhead: ~49.5 min F814W is scheduled first to ensure the deeper F555W imaging is prioritized in the event of early orbit termination. DITHER STRATEGY: 18383( 4) - 26-Aug-2026 18:20:40 - [ 2] A 2-point dither pattern (ACS-WFC-DITHER-LINE or WFC-DITHER-BOX-MIN) is applied between the two sub-exposures in each filter to: (1) enable cosmic ray rejection between the CR-SPLIT pairs, (2) improve sub-pixel sampling of the PSF, (3) mitigate the effect of hot pixels and chip defects. Dither step size: ~0.5 arcsec along the diagonal to ensure adequate pixel phase coverage. APERTURE AND ORIENTATION: Aperture: WFC (full frame, 202" x 202" field of view, 0.05"/pixel) No ORIENT constraint required; any orientation is acceptable for photometric imaging. BACKGROUND: No special background constraints. Low background (shadow) is preferred but not required given the surface brightness of the targets (mu_i ~ 15.2 mag/arcsec^2 at the core break radius). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: None. Standard ACS/WFC imaging mode. No coronagraph, no grism, no special readout pattern required. - NO ORIENT constraint - NO SAME ORIENT between visits required - Scheduling: no time-critical constraints - Guide stars: standard two-gyro mode acceptable - Availability: schedulable any time within Cycle 34 S/N JUSTIFICATION: The 1:3 exposure ratio (F814W:F555W = 540s:1800s) is designed to deliver equal S/N ~ 30 per pixel at the core break radius in both filters, accounting for the intrinsic (V-I) ~ 1.25 mag color of the old stellar populations in these giant elliptical galaxies (mu_i ~ 15.2 mag/arcsec^2 from Pan-STARRS photometry; D. D. Nguyen et al. 2023). This S/N is sufficient for accurate MGE surface brightness profile fitting and stellar mass model construction from the BH sphere of influence to the outer halo.
