For most stars, STIS G140M is the only practical observing mode for Lyman alpha, and hundreds of such spectra have been obtained. However, the resolution of G140M is too low to separate the HI and DI line cores, leading to large systematic uncertainties in existing reconstruction routines. Such systematic errors were dramatically demonstrated via observations of the binary EG UMa, where reconstructions at different levels of ISM absorption returned intrinsic Lyman alpha fluxes that differed by more than a factor of two. These systematic errors must be resolved to ensure the reliability of Lyman alpha measurements based on G140M. We aim to develop the most advanced reconstruction routines to date and collect a sample of observations at which to test it. The new reconstruction routines drastically reduce the time required for a reconstruction, allowing us to include new priors and explore an expanded parameter space of solutions in ways that were impractical until now. Our laboratory will be a sample of five close white dwarf-M dwarf binaries. The high radial velocity change over the binary orbit moves the M dwarf Lyman alpha line through different levels of ISM absorption, allowing reconstructions based on a highly absorbed line to be compared with the unabsorbed, ground truth line. We will also observe the Mg II emission lines of each star, which provide an independent measurement of the ISM column density. This experiment will finally confirm reconstructions based on G140M as a reliable measurement of the true Lyman alpha line. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ The program will observe 6 stars with STIS G140M (four visits) and E230M (one visit). The targets are post-common envelope binaries consisting of a white dwarf and M dwarf in < 1 day orbits. The objective is to observe the HI Lyman alpha 1216A line of the M dwarf at different radial velocities and thus different levels of absorption by the fixed-velocity ISM. The E230M observations will provide an independent observation of the ISM absorption at 18409( 4) - 31-Aug-2026 21:13:29 - [ 2] Mg II 2800A. The G140M visits will use the 1222A cenwave. One observation should be obtained at each of orbital phases 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75, with an allowable phase range of +/- 0.05. G140M observations will NOT be obtained for Target 1 EG UMa as suitable archival observations are available. The E230M observations will use the 2707A cenwave to cover the Mg II 2800A doublet. As both the emission and absorption lines are quite narrow, the observations should be obtained at a phase such that the estimated velocity of the M dwarf and ISM are close to the same, i.e. at phases 0 and 0.5 plus an adjustment for the systemic velocity . The exact phase ranges are given in the APT based on an estimated ISM velocity for each star. The phase error is tighter for the E230M, typically +/- 0.02, as the MgII lines are very narrow. The APT only allows one phase range for the NUV observations. We list both allowable ranges here if it helps with scheduling: Note: After the intial phase 2 submission we realised that we can remove this restriction for three targets, as the white dwarf continumn will be bright enough to detect the ISM as an absorption feature regardless of whether or not it falls on the M dwarf emission lines. WOLF-1130 0.99-0.02, 0.48-0.51 G-249-36 0.01-0.05, 0.45-0.49 A secondary goal of the E230M observation of Target 2 DE CVN is to obtain the previously unobserved white dwarf NUV spectrum. As the white dwarf is eclipsed by the M dwarf at phase 0, only phase 0.5 is suitable for the E230M observations. The observations should be carried out at times where the ISM velocity relative to the Earth is < 20 km/s, such that the bright Lya airglow line falls into the deepest ISM absorption. We have calculated this for each star and find allowable ranges of many months, and Wolf 1130 fulfils this requirement at all times. Whilst we do not have it as a constraint to aid scheduling, we request that the observations for each star are obtained as close together as possible to reduce the effects of intrinsic variability between visits.
