Koester Universitat Kiel N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract The pristine hydrogen/helium atmosphere of white dwarfs are frequently polluted by planetary material. Spectroscopic observations of these systems allow us to infer the accreted bodies through measurements of photospheric abundances. This technique has been successfully applied to hundreds of white dwarfs, the vast majority of which are below 25, 000K. In contrast, hot (and commensurately young) white dwarfs have remained largely unexplored, despite evidence that many are accreting planetary material. In this proposal, we aim to broaden ultraviolet coverage for 17 white dwarfs known to be polluted, identified from previous FUSE observations, in order to characterise the accreted material. With complete ultraviolet spectra of this sample, we will directly constrain the composition of material accreted by hot white dwarfs. By measuring both volatile (e.g. C, N, O, P, S) and refractory (e.g. Al, Si, Ca, Fe, Ni) elements, we will compare their relative abundances to distinguish between different sources of accreted material. In particular, we will test whether these systems accrete volatile-rich atmospheres from photoevaporated giant planets or predominantly rocky debris rapidly delivered to the white dwarf surface. Second-generation planets are predicted to form from the ejecta of AGB progenitors and should exhibit enhancements in s-process elements (e.g. Sr, Nb, Ba, Pb). The ultraviolet provides access to key transitions of these elements in hot white dwarfs, enabling us to search for candidates. Also, the prevalence of high-ionisation lines in hot white dwarfs may indicate the presence of chromospheres, offering further insight into their atmospheric structure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We will get medium resolution spectroscopy of 17 hot white dwarfs known to be enriched, allowing us to measure their photospheric abundances and determine the origin of the external material. For all targets, we use STIS NUV with grating E230M and central wavelength 1978A with an aperture of 0.2x0.2.
