Unlike massive X-ray detected groups and clusters, the low-mass IGrM is predicted to be dominated by cool/warm gas uniquely detectable using HST/COS. While dozens of COS programs have characterized the Circum-Galactic Medium (CGM) of individual galaxies, the larger context for current-day star formation, the small, spiral-rich group IGrM, has not been detected nor had its baryons inventoried; nor has the IGrM of our Local Group (M_halo = 10^12.7 M_Sun) been detected unambiguously due to distance uncertainties. By avoiding sight lines passing through the CGM of individual group galaxies, these high-S/N FUV spectra will probe the cool (Ly-alpha, Si II & Si III) and warm (Ly-alpha & O VI) IGrM in Local Group analogues with 10^12.4 < M_halo < 10^13.8 M_sun for the first time. From the COS spectra we will estimate: (1) the covering fraction and extent of H I Ly-alpha and metal-bearing absorbers; (2) the baryon content of the IGrM (simulations suggest 10-30% of baryonic closure); (3) the fraction of absorbers that are escaping, providing evidence that the IGrM is either a nearly isothermal "closed box" or is "feedback flattened"; and (4) the gas retention mass above which all baryons are retained. In comparison with previous COS studies of X-ray emitting groups, this mass limit will be compared to the halo mass above which passive galaxies and an X-ray emitting IGrM occur. We request 42 orbits to observe the best 6 targets with S/N~12 at the O VI doublet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Our low-mass, group-selected sample contains 6 AGN sight lines probing low-mass galaxy groups at z=0.075-0.15. This range was selected such that the O VI 1032, 1038 A doublet redshifts into the COS/G130M spectral range at good sensitivity, while Ly-alpha 1216 A, Si II 1190, 1193 A (1260 A for some groups) and Si III 1206 A are also present. We further required that both Ly-alpha and O VI 1032 A fall in spectral regions free of strong Galactic absorption and gain sag. Two slightly-higher-redshift groups (55394 & 36750) need to be observed with the 18429( 2) - 17-Aug-2026 23:51:11 - [ 2] G130M/1291 setting to cover the wavelengths of Ly-alpha and O VI simultaneously. A range of impact parameters and group halo masses is well-represented. Using the SDSS spectroscopic redshift information, we verified that the nearest individual bright group galaxy to each sight line is >1.7 virial radii away (typically >500 kpc in projection); almost all are >2 virial radii away, well outside the region of bound CGM gas. This criteria makes sure that any detected absorption is associated with the intragroup medium and not the CGM of an individual galaxy (see e.g., Prochaska+11, Stocke+13, Keeney+17). We estimate the far-UV flux of each AGN from GALEX FUV-band photometry or previous low-resolution FUV spectra, where available. The COS ETC was used to estimate the exposure time necessary for our required S/N ~ 12 per resolution element spectra at the wavelength of the redshifted O VI doublet and the results rounded to the nearest orbit. The only previous HST/COS program which attempted to observe low-mass group gas is GO-13314 (McCabe+21). However, our detailed scrutiny of each McCabe+21 sight line (including new galaxy spectroscopy by us) finds that 15 of the 18 are too close to a bright group galaxy to provide unambiguous IGrM probes. The close galaxy proximity requires that any UV absorption detected must be ascribed to CGM, not intragroup gas. The COS spectra obtained by McCabe+21 have lower S/N (< 10 compared to ~12 for this proposed study) so that fewer O VI lines (8/18) are detected. GO-13314 aside, only two Berlind groups were probed by previous high-S/N spectra. For PG 0953+415 a COS (S/N ~ 40) spectrum plus excellent FUSE data detect a possible broad Ly-alpha absorber and two probable O VI absorbers in a low-mass group at z = 0.042. A low-mass Berlind group at z = 0.19 in the PG 1121+420 sight line (S/N = 23) has detections in Ly-alpha, O VI, and several other ions at +231 km/s, likely bound to that group. In summary, we add 5 archival spectra (3 from GO-13314 and 2 from GTO data) to our low-mass group IGrM sample. Ground-based multi-object spectroscopy (MOS) will be obtained using MMTO/Hectospec to provide group galaxy redshifts, galaxy type classifications and star-formation rates complete to ~0.2 L* over a 40-arcmin field of view for all 11 of these groups. Ground-based MOS is already available for the two COS-GTO archival sightlines. These deep MOS observations will refine the detailed characteristics of each group (e.g., stellar and halo masses, velocity dispersion, group centroid position) for better comparison with the UV absorption-line data.
